The severity of her injuries required a dramatic step: southbound traffic on U.S. 81/287 was temporarily shut down entirely so that an Air Evac Lifeteam 68 helicopter could land directly on the highway lanes to evacuate her, the outlet reported.
That rapid response was possible in part because Air Evac Lifeteam 68 operates a permanent flight base on Medical Center Drive in Decatur, according to Air Evac Lifeteam, which provides dedicated helicopter air-medical evacuations across rural Wise County and the surrounding North Texas region. Medical City Denton, where both occupants of the sedan were taken, was reaccredited in May 2025 as a Level II Trauma Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services, according to Medical City Denton, making it the only hospital in Denton County equipped for 24-hour specialized trauma care.
A Stormy Afternoon Overwhelmed First Responders
The Decatur crash coincided with a line of afternoon thunderstorms that dropped 0.34 inches of rain on Decatur and 1.47 inches on Bridgeport, triggering a wave of weather-related traffic accidents throughout the area, per the Wise County Messenger's Friday update. The storms broke a multi-month dry spell in the region even as they multiplied the workload for local emergency crews.
Wise County personnel were stretched thin that same on Thursday, responding to a cluster of major traffic incidents that included an overturned semi-truck trailer on U.S. 287 in Alvord at 3:55 p.m. and an overturned horse trailer on FM 920 at 4:21 p.m., the outlet's coverage of the day noted. The back-to-back calls illustrated the heavy demand placed on first responders during the storm-driven surge.
The County's Deadliest Corridor
U.S. 81/287 carries roughly 50,000 vehicles per day through Wise County and has been recognized by local officials as the county's deadliest roadway, having claimed 15 lives between February and October 2024 out of 29 countywide traffic fatalities, the Wise County Messenger reported in earlier coverage.
