New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman will meet for their only televised debate of the 2026 governor's race on October 13, a single face-to-face encounter that will help define the final weeks before Election Day. The primetime matchup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast statewide on NY1 and Spectrum News, with a simultaneous stream on YouTube.
The debate arrangement, confirmed per Spectrum News, will be moderated by Errol Louis, host of NY1's Inside City Hall, alongside Susan Arbetter, anchor of Capitol Tonight. Hochul, the Democratic incumbent seeking a second full term, and Blakeman, the Republican challenger and sitting Nassau County executive, have not agreed to any other televised engagements, according to the New York Post. Blakeman has criticized Hochul for declining additional debates and has challenged her to appear on other networks, per the same report.
The single-debate format is not new for Hochul. She used an identical strategy in her 2022 victory over Republican Lee Zeldin, agreeing to just one televised, hour-long debate hosted by Spectrum News NY1 in late October of that race, according to CBS News. It's a familiar playbook for an incumbent trying to minimize risk while holding a lead in the polls.
A Widening Poll Gap, or a Tightening Race?
The public polling picture favors Hochul heading into the debate. An August Siena College poll of likely New York voters found her leading Blakeman 49% to 39%, including a 16-point advantage on affordable housing, according to Siena College. Hochul also benefits from her position as the Democratic incumbent.
Blakeman's campaign points to different numbers. An internal poll from Republican firm McLaughlin & Associates in late August showed a far tighter race, with Hochul at 49.6% and Blakeman at 45.7%, as reported by City & State New York. The dueling surveys give both camps a talking point heading into their only shared stage.
Labor Rift Deepens for Hochul
The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association voted 1,370 to 78 this month to endorse Blakeman, the union's first-ever gubernatorial endorsement, as Buffalo News reported and Hoodline previously covered. The endorsement underscores the law-and-order coalition Blakeman has tried to build around his candidacy.
Blakeman has also worked to expand his reach beyond the Republican and Conservative party lines. His campaign submitted more than 66,000 petition signatures back in May to secure an independent ballot line called “Vote Affordable,” a move aimed squarely at cost-of-living messaging for non-aligned voters.
Legal Fights Trail Blakeman's Record
Blakeman's tenure as Nassau County executive carries its own baggage into the debate. Nassau County Democratic legislators sued him over his 2024 creation of a provisional special deputies program to train armed civilian property owners for emergencies, according to Newsday. A Nassau County Supreme Court judge separately ruled in May 2024 that Blakeman exceeded his executive authority when he issued an order banning transgender female athletes from county sports facilities, per the Los Angeles Blade.
Other Statewide Races Also Head to the Stage
The governor's race isn't the only statewide contest getting a televised showdown. Spectrum News will host a debate between incumbent Democratic State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and Republican challenger Joseph Hernandez on October 1, followed by a debate between incumbent Attorney General Letitia James and Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy on October 8, per Spectrum News.
With early voting approaching and the general election set for Tuesday, November 3, the October 13 debate stands as the only scheduled moment when Hochul and Blakeman will face each other directly before voters decide the race.
