Tuesday should remain mostly sunny at times, with a high near 87 and a heat index reaching 95. Scattered showers are possible, with a 30% chance of rain, while east-northeast winds gust as high as 21 mph.
Conditions turn noticeably wetter late Wednesday through Friday as deeper tropical moisture moves across the islands. The National Weather Service says showers will become more frequent and could be heavy, especially in windward and mountain areas, as noted by National Weather Service Honolulu, while leeward Honolulu may feel hot and muggy between passing showers.
Thursday Looks Like The Wettest Day
Thursday could bring heavier showers and breezy east-northeast winds, with a high near 88. Gusts could approach 29 mph, and showers are expected to continue Thursday night with an 80% chance of rain.
Friday remains unsettled, with likely showers, gusts up to 31 mph and a 70% chance of rain. Forecasters say a Flood Watch could become warranted for Thursday into Thursday night, as reported by National Weather Service Honolulu, but no watches, warnings or advisories are currently in effect.
How Residents Can Check Flood Risk
Residents can check whether a specific address is in a flood zone or another mapped hazard area using the Oʻahu Hazard Explorer, according to the City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management. The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources cautions that its Flood Hazard Assessment Tool does not identify every area subject to flooding, so residents should also consult county guidance for location-specific maps and requirements. Comparable conditions have affected Oʻahu before. Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency records show that heavy rain, high winds and flooding from a low-pressure system affected the City and County of Honolulu from Dec. 10-16, 2008, prompting a request for a major disaster declaration. That was a past event, not part of the current forecast.
Weekend Weather Gradually Improves
The wet pattern should ease somewhat over the weekend, though showers may linger through at least part of Saturday as conditions improve.
