Houston police are investigating a Sunday-night confrontation on I-610 that included a crash and gunfire. Reports citing HPD said the West Loop remained closed for hours as investigators processed the scene, according to ABC13 Houston and KHOU 11. Police had not determined which vehicle fired first.
What HPD has confirmed
HPD identified three vehicles in the investigation: a black Chevrolet Camaro, a silver Cadillac Escalade and a white pickup truck. The reported area stretched from near Ella Boulevard on the North Loop to San Felipe Street on the West Loop. The Escalade and Camaro collided, and investigators found bullet holes in the vehicles, ABC13 reported.
The male driver of the Escalade was shot once and hospitalized in critical condition, according to FOX 26 Houston. A 7-year-old child in the Escalade was not injured, ABC13 reported. Reports also reflected an HPD revision in the number of shooting victims: ABC13 said the department changed its initial count from two to three.
The Camaro's driver was an armed, off-duty Harris County Sheriff's Office detention officer; reports said he was not injured. A woman riding in the Camaro was hospitalized, but the available accounts did not establish whether her injuries came from the collision or gunfire. ABC13, KHOU 11 and FOX 26 each reported on the officer, the woman and the differing injury accounts.
Earlier Houston-area road-rage cases
Earlier Houston-area freeway road-rage shootings have led to lengthy prison sentences. ABC13 Houston reported that a June 2019 confrontation that began on I-10 W. and ended near Morton Ranch at Mason Road resulted in a 25-year prison sentence for Deitrich Thomas after Erick Starr was shot and killed. Houston Public Media, citing The Associated Press, reported that Gerald Williams later pleaded guilty to murder and received a 30-year sentence after a July 2021 traffic dispute on Interstate 10 led to the killing of 17-year-old David Castro.
Unresolved parts of the investigation
Police also identified a white GMC pickup as part of the incident. Its driver reportedly stopped, fought with people in the Escalade and then left, leaving a woman behind; no one in the pickup was reported injured. HPD had not determined which people or vehicles fired weapons, and the accounts available for this story do not resolve that question.
Charges and information requests
No immediate charges were expected when the initial reports were published. The Harris County District Attorney's Office was expected to be contacted as the investigation continued, according to ABC13 and KHOU 11.
