McKinley Bass, 18, faces a third-degree felony charge of cruelty to a non-livestock animal in connection with alleged abuse at a Humble home. Three-month-old puppy Nyla was found with multiple broken bones in different stages of healing and is recovering at the Houston SPCA, according to Click2Houston. Harris County Precinct One said Bass surrendered to a court.
What investigators allege
The investigation began after a neighbor reported possible abuse involving dogs at the home. According to the report and criminal complaint, the neighbor provided investigators with videos recorded from Aug. 27 through Sept. 3. Investigators said the footage showed a man they identified as matching Bass’s appearance handling Nyla roughly, including picking her up and slamming her to the ground. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.
Authorities also reported that an adult dog taken from the home had a broken rib and an object resembling a pellet lodged in its skin. The Houston SPCA is caring for that dog as well. The specific statutory subsection underlying Bass’s charge and the reason the charge is classified as a third-degree felony have not been independently verified.
Local cases, different allegations
The Houston SPCA says it primarily investigates cruelty cases in Harris County and surrounding counties, and directs people to report suspected cruelty online or at 713-869-7722. That local role provides reporting context, but does not establish the outcome of the Humble investigation.
A separate Precinct One case involved a different allegation and location: KPRC Click2Houston reported on July 6, 2026, that Deontwon Marquise Perry Jr. faced a misdemeanor cruelty charge after a puppy was found in a locked container in a Channelview field in January. That report described alleged abandonment, not the alleged physical abuse in Nyla’s case, and did not report how Perry’s case was ultimately resolved. The two cases are examples, not evidence of a broader trend.
