Il Ponte, a new Italian-American restaurant from chef Adam Siegel and Daria Aitken-Siegel, opened its doors for dinner Tuesday at 814 E. Mason St. in downtown Milwaukee, bringing in-house pasta to the ground floor of Northwestern Mutual's newly reimagined North Building. The menu includes antipasti, soups and salads running about $12 to $19 and pastas and entrées priced roughly $17 to $44.
The restaurant sits on the ground level of Northwestern Mutual's North Building. The name itself carries a double meaning: “Il Ponte” translates to “the bridge” in Italian, nodding both to the idea of connecting people over a shared table and to the enclosed skywalk physically linking the North Building to Northwestern Mutual's 32-story tower and commons complex.
A Family Affair Rooted in Long Island Traditions
The restaurant is associated with Siegel and Aitken-Siegel. Its approach is Italian-American comfort food.
The kitchen is led by executive chef Angel Otero, with Zachary Baca as executive sous chef and Rosy Rodriguez as sous chef. Pastas are made in-house.
Building on the Lupi & Iris Track Record
Siegel and Aitken-Siegel aren't newcomers to East Town dining. Lupi & Iris is a French and Italian Riviera-focused restaurant.
Siegel’s Milwaukee résumé includes serving as corporate executive chef for Bartolotta Restaurants beginning in 2010 and earning the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Midwest in 2008 while leading Bartolotta’s Lake Park Bistro, according to D'Artagnan Blog.
Wine List, Design and the Space Itself
The restaurant occupies a space seating 155 guests overall, per Urban Milwaukee. Eppstein Uhen Architects is designing the space. Beyond the main room, Il Ponte has a central bar and private dining space.
The North Building project is also undergoing renovation.
A Changing Downtown Setting
Il Ponte arrives as downtown Milwaukee continues to add residents and investment. According to Milwaukee Downtown’s five-year strategic plan, the downtown residential population had increased 21.2% since 2010, with more than 2,000 additional housing units under construction. The plan also reports that more than $4.6 billion had been invested in the central business district since 2010, with more than $3.1 billion in under-construction and proposed projects.
The restaurant is part of Northwestern Mutual’s broader North Building project. The Daily Reporter reported that the 18-story building at 818 E. Mason St., constructed in the 1990s, is being redeveloped with Gilbane Building Co. and CG Schmidt. The refit includes exterior and interior renovations, a new sign and a pedestrian plaza, with the company expecting the project to open in 2027, according to the report.
