Des Bishop, born in New York and raised in Queens before moving to Ireland, is set to headline Cap City Comedy Club, according to the event listing from CultureMap Austin. Bishop moved from Queens to Ireland in 1990, a relocation that would eventually shape his entire comedic identity, as detailed by CultureMap Austin. He is described in the event listing as a massive name in Ireland and a rising star in the United States, known for comedy that is unique, insightful, and provocative, with a restless imagination and perceptive comic observations delivered in an open and honest style. An Unusual Path Through Two Foreign Languages
Bishop's journey to Ireland at age 14 came after he was sent from Queens to an Irish boarding school due to behavioral troubles, according to the Los Angeles Times. He achieved sobriety at 19 in 1995 before building his early comedy career in Ireland, the paper reports, and his struggles with teenage addiction have frequently informed his observational routines. Bishop went on to gain widespread fame in Ireland through immersive docu-comedy series, including 2004's The Des Bishop Work Experience, in which he lived on minimum wage, and 2008's In the Name of the Fada, where he learned Irish Gaelic well enough to perform a full stand-up show in the language, per the Los Angeles Times.
That same restless approach took him even further from home. In 2013, Bishop moved to Beijing for 18 months, learned Mandarin, and performed stand-up in the language, a project that produced the RTE television series Breaking China and his 2015 special Made in China, according to BeatRoute. In May 2022, he married comedian and former Summer House reality TV star Hannah Berner in the Hamptons, and the couple now co-hosts the podcast Berner Phone with Des Bishop, according to Us Weekly. A Venue With Its Own Comeback Story
Cap City Comedy Club is itself no stranger to reinvention. The club originally opened in Austin in March 1986 as The Laff Stop on Research Boulevard before changing its name in 1996, serving as an early launchpad for comedy legends including Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison, according to the club's own history. Hoodline previously noted a jazz concert held at that original Research Boulevard location in a 2019 roundup of Austin music events.
After shuttering that original location during the pandemic in September 2020, Cap City was acquired by Helium Comedy Club executives Marc and Brad Grossman and reopened in July 2022 as a 380-seat, two-stage venue in The Domain, according to the Austin Chronicle. Supply chain delays pushed the grand opening from 2021 into the summer of 2022, the Chronicle reported. Cap City now operates under the Helium Comedy Club network, which runs eight comedy venues across cities including Portland, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and St. Louis, the Chronicle noted, with Helium having kept the legacy Cap City brand intact after the 2021 acquisition.
Part of a Broader Local Comedy Boom
Bishop's booking arrives as Austin's stand-up scene has grown into one of the country's most prominent, with the Los Angeles Times reporting that the city's comedy ecosystem expanded rapidly between 2021 and 2023, establishing Austin as a major national comedy hub alongside New York and Los Angeles through high-profile venue launches like Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership and Cap City's move to The Domain. Cap City has also continued to nurture homegrown talent through its annual Funniest Person in Austin competition, an ongoing tradition established in the late 1980s that brought together more than 250 local contestants competing for a $3,500 grand prize this past summer, according to the club.
