Two people were hospitalized Friday after a four-vehicle collision involving a big rig near East Arrow Highway and Avenida Barbosa in Irwindale. The crash was reported shortly before 11:45 a.m., and a car caught fire as emergency crews responded, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles.
The two occupants were trapped in the wreckage and were later freed and taken to a hospital, FOX 11 reported. The identities of those injured were not released, and officials had not determined what caused the collision. Road closures were reported near the crash site while crews worked at the scene.
A separate Irwindale-area semi crash was more severe
The latest collision occurred on a surface street, rather than on the nearby 210 Freeway. That distinction matters when comparing it with a separate June 20 incident: KTLA reported that a semi crossed the center divider on the westbound 210 just west of Irwindale Avenue, killing one person and injuring multiple others. The freeway crash involved substantially more reported casualties and a different roadway setting, so it does not establish that the two incidents shared a cause or represent a pattern at the Arrow Highway intersection.
The comparison does show why location and road type are important in assessing truck collisions around Irwindale. The current crash involved four vehicles near Arrow Highway and Avenida Barbosa, while the June incident occurred on a divided freeway and involved a semi crossing the median. Investigators have not released enough information about the current crash to determine whether speed, traffic conditions, vehicle failure or another factor played a role.
Local crash data remains limited
Statewide highway statistics also cannot be used as a direct safety measure for this incident. The California Department of Transportation says its 2024 annual crash report is based exclusively on collisions occurring on state highways, meaning it does not directly measure crashes on local streets such as Arrow Highway: Caltrans reported.
For now, the confirmed picture is limited to the immediate response: two people were rescued and hospitalized after the multi-vehicle crash, and a car fire and nearby closures complicated the scene. Additional information from investigators or local transportation agencies would be needed to explain the cause or determine whether the intersection has a documented history of similar collisions.
