According to ABC7 New York, Brunson opened his monologue joking about not singing, before Kenan Thompson popped up in character as Stephen A. Smith, a nod to the ESPN personality's well-documented status as a Knicks fan. Brunson also said he was looking forward to getting back to the Knicks' home court at Madison Square Garden, throwing in a reference to the arena's recent turn as the site of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding.
The premiere itself ran into a scheduling snag before it even started. NBC's broadcast was delayed by as much as 16 minutes in parts of the country because of a late-running Big Ten football game between USC and Oregon, according to LateNighter, with the network giving local affiliates the option of airing the show live at 11:30 p.m. ET or on a short tape delay following postgame coverage.
Teammates Take Their Turn At The Mic
Each Knick got a moment in the spotlight once they joined Brunson onstage. Towns asked whether someone can foul out of Saturday Night Live, quipping, “So I can be here, like, the whole show? Bridges asked about Brunson's wingspan and lamented that he will never fly, while Hart pressed Brunson on why he poked him in the backside during the Knicks' NBA Cup celebration.
Anunoby's exchange carried the most weight given what it referenced. He asked Brunson whether he remembered missing a shot late in Game 4 of the Finals against San Antonio — the same game in which Anunoby's tip-in with 1.2 seconds left completed a 29-point comeback, the largest in NBA Finals history. Brunson's hosting gig also placed him in rare company among athletes who have taken the SNL stage. ABC7 notes he became the first active NBA player to host since LeBron James in 2007, and the first professional athlete of any sport to host since Travis Kelce in 2023. Michael Jordan hosted in 1991, Charles Barkley did it four times including once as an active player in 1993, and Bill Russell hosted in 1979, a decade after he had retired. Brunson was not the first active NBA player to host a season premiere; Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and LeBron James had previously done so.

Brunson framed his approach to hosting in basketball terms, telling the audience, “I'm going to approach this the same way I approach a Knicks Finals game,” and promising that the first three quarters of the show would be bad before the last sketch turned out amazing, according to ABC7.
