A new coffee shop is about to give Cleveland's Jefferson neighborhood something it has never had: a place of its own to grab a latte. Nonbeanery Café, a queer-owned spot at 13046 Lorain Ave., plans to open in late September or early October, taking over a former deli space next to Der Braumeister.
The café is owned by Briana Bozin, with Allie Brown managing day-to-day operations, and both are nonbinary, according to cleveland.com. The pair worked on the project for nearly two years, and the outlet reports that the name Nonbeanery is a play on coffee beans that reflects the owners' identities. The opening had been delayed while the café waited on its espresso machine, but Bozin and Brown are now aiming for a late-September or early-October debut.
Once open, Nonbeanery will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, serving Duck-Rabbit coffee alongside house-made syrups in flavors like vanilla, lavender and simple syrup, with seasonal banana bread and pumpkin varieties possible down the line. The menu will also include baked goods such as scones and muffins, though the café does not have a kitchen. With 25 seats, the shop plans to hire four additional staff members to help run the space.
A Vintage, Personal Feel Built by the Owners Themselves
Bozin and Brown handled much of the café's construction and design work themselves, filling the space with secondhand decor, vintage items and personal childhood pieces meant to make it feel personal and cozy. A VHS television playing old family movie collections adds to that lived-in atmosphere. The café will also give local artists wall space to display and sell their work, folding a community art gallery into the coffee shop concept.
Bozin told the outlet that opening a coffee shop had long been a goal, and that the Jefferson location felt like the right place at the right time. The building itself, formerly home to Frank's Delicatessen, is owned by Jenn Wirtz, who also owns neighboring Der Braumeister. Bozin and Brown began working with Wirtz in October 2025, and the space was ready for them by July 2026.
Filling a Gap in West Park's Coffee Scene
Nonbeanery is set to become the only coffee shop in the Jefferson neighborhood, with the nearest comparable options sitting outside its borders. Dahlia Coffee Co. operates in nearby Cudell, while Five Points Cafe is located farther west in West Park, leaving Jefferson without a dedicated café until now.
Wirtz said she hoped the project would help push the Jefferson-Puritas and West Park area forward, adding that the space should contribute something to the community. Bozin and Brown have said they want to be good neighbors as they settle into the corridor.
The café's arrival lines up with a broader planning push underway in the area. The Jefferson-Puritas West Park CDC, which has served the eastern portion of West Park since 1992, launched a community-led planning process in late October 2025 aimed at economic opportunity, housing, business corridors and public spaces. That effort, expected to produce final recommendations by August 2026, is meant to serve as a roadmap for neighborhood improvements over the next five to seven years, according to the organization.
