School is officially in session at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, where Jocelyn Bioh's School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play opened on Broadway Monday for a limited engagement running through November 1. The comedy, set at a Ghanaian boarding school in 1986, follows a pageant rivalry between two students, Paulina and Ericka, both vying for the attention of a former Miss Ghana who has come to recruit a contestant for an international beauty pageant.
The production, staged by Manhattan Theatre Club at its Midtown Manhattan house, began previews earlier this month and marks the culmination of a nearly decade-long journey for the play, according to Manhattan Theatre Club. Paulina is played by Tony nominee Denée Benton, Ericka by Tony nominee Jasmine Amy Rogers, and the pageant recruiter Eloise by Tony winner Patina Miller, according to PIX11, which spoke with members of the cast. Four of the actresses in the ensemble are making their Broadway debuts, PIX11 reports.
A Decade From Off-Broadway to the Main Stem
Bioh's comedy originally premiered Off-Broadway at MCC Theater in November 2017 under the direction of Rebecca Taichman, where it won the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Playwriting Award, and a Drama Desk Ensemble Award, according to American Theatre. In the years since, the play has become one of the most widely mounted contemporary works in American regional theater, staged in more than 80 regional productions and making its UK debut at London's Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in June 2023, per BroadwayWorld.
That widespread regional footprint helped build the momentum that carried the show to its Main Stem transfer nearly a decade after it first opened downtown. The play runs 80 minutes with no intermission, according to Manhattan Theatre Club. Per PIX11's report, Bioh has said she draws on her own journey with colorism, beauty standards and self-worth in the writing of the piece.
Bioh Reunites With Director Whitney White
For this production, Bioh reunited with director Whitney White, PIX11 notes, a pairing that carries real weight in the current Broadway season. Bioh and White are collaborating on School Girls during the 2026–2027 theatrical season.
The two previously teamed up on the 2023 comedy-drama Jaja's African Hair Braiding, which also played MTC's Friedman Theatre. That prior collaboration has followed the duo into School Girls, lending the new production an added layer of critical anticipation.
The Playwright Takes the Stage Herself
In a twist that gives the run an unusual news hook, Bioh is scheduled to step into her own play for four performances, October 9 through October 11, taking over the role of pageant recruiter Eloise Amponsah from Patina Miller.
The Broadway run is produced by Manhattan Theatre Club in association with Chase This Productions and Susan Kelechi Watson, with financial support from the Anna L. Weissberger Foundation, per Manhattan Theatre Club.
