A 91-year-old Kekaha man died after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle through an intersection near his hometown, Kauai police said. The crash happened around 7 a.m. at Elepaio Road and Alae Road, when a 62-year-old woman driving a 2018 Toyota SUV turned into the path of the westbound cyclist.
Police said the woman had been traveling east on Elepaio Road when she turned left onto Alae Road and collided with the bicyclist, according to Hawaii News Now. Paramedics rushed the man to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the outlet reported. Police have not publicly identified him.
Helmet Was Missing, Speed Not Seen as a Factor
Officers noted that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, per the same report. Investigators said speed and impairment did not appear to be factors in the crash, at least based on what was known when police spoke to reporters. The intersection was closed for about two hours while officers worked the scene.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that witnesses were asked to contact Officer Henshaw at (808) 241-1611, or to submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers Kauai at (808) 246-8300 or through the P3 Tips mobile app. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, according to KITV.
Another Kekaha Bicyclist Killed Last Year
The tragedy echoes a strikingly similar case from February 2025, when 79-year-old Irineo Eder of Kekaha was struck by a truck while bicycling westbound on Kaumualii Highway, according to Hawaii News Now's earlier coverage. Eder was taken to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition and died days later, on March 1, 2025. Police said at the time that Eder also was not wearing a helmet, and that speed and impairment did not appear to be factors — and that crash was described as Kauai's third traffic-related fatality of that year.
Fatal bicycle crashes involving older riders have also surfaced elsewhere in the islands. On Oahu, a 75-year-old man died in early August, more than a year after he was hit by a car on Farrington Highway near Hakimo Road in Nanakuli, KHON2 reported. He had been hospitalized in serious condition after that February 2025 crash, and that investigation, too, remained ongoing as of the station's report.
