Kennus Gowans became a match for his wife, Jennifer Hill-Gowans, after a second round of testing earlier in 2026.
The Keller couple, married 26 years, arrived at Baylor Scott and White Dallas on September 4 for the transplant surgery, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Hill-Gowans was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2020 and received dialysis for three and a half years before the transplant.
Kennus said he was happy to donate to his wife. The Star-Telegram also reported that Jennifer had nearly died after entering a diabetic coma.
A Direct Match Between Spouses

Living Donation and Other Paths to a Match
The OPTN/SRTR 2024 Annual Data Report recorded 27,660 kidney transplants in the United States in 2024, including 6,419 living donor kidney transplants. These figures provide national context for the Gowanses’ transplant; they count transplants, not people on the kidney-transplant waitlist. For pairs whose willing donor is incompatible with the intended recipient, the National Kidney Registry explains that paired exchange allows the donor to give a kidney to another recipient in return for a compatible kidney for their intended recipient.
The Star-Telegram reported that Kennus stopped breathing and was intubated during the operation. He later experienced nerve pain, which had begun to ease after 20 days. The couple also joined post-transplant support groups.
Life After Dialysis
Jennifer has described the years of poor health as traumatic. After the transplant, she donated her old dialysis supplies. She had stepped back from her career during the worst of her illness, according to the Star-Telegram.
The couple’s son, Torrey Gowans, watched their experience unfold. Jennifer said he plans to help his parents stay accountable about their health, the Star-Telegram reported.

Covering the Cost
The couple received help with pre- and post-surgery expenses from the National Living Donor Assistance Center, the American Living Organ Donor Fund, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
