Kiko Milano opened its first permanent New York City store in more than a decade on September 5, planting a 1,700-square-foot boutique in SoHo dressed in lilac tones, classic Italian archways and Milanese stainless steel. The Italian cosmetics brand is treating the shop as a flagship rather than a fleeting marketing stunt, a distinction it has made explicit as it pushes back into brick-and-mortar retail across the city.
According to Cosmetics Business, Kiko Milano opted for a permanent location rather than a temporary marketing moment, positioning the opening as a deliberate counterpoint to the throwaway culture of beauty pop-ups that have become common around the city. The company cited examples like the Mikayla Nogueira and Sephora parties and Chanel's fragrance pop-up in the Meatpacking District as the kind of short-lived activations it wanted to avoid, noting that New York Fashion Week activations are often temporary. Kiko Milano said it is bringing a little bit of Milan to downtown New York to celebrate its newest U.S. destination.
The SoHo address itself carries real financial weight. Kiko Milano signed a long-term lease for 1,850 square feet of retail space at 430 West Broadway; the store itself measures 1,700 square feet. The deal was struck in April 2026 for a boutique property developed by United American Land and designed by Morris Adjmi Architects, according to Traded. That rent underscores the central bet behind the opening: whether a brand built on sub-$20 lipsticks and lip glosses can justify some of Manhattan's priciest retail real estate.
A Grand Opening With Free Products and Live DJs
Kiko Milano marked the launch with a grand opening event running from September 5 through 7, offering free cosmetic products to the first 500 Saturday visitors, live DJ sets, custom engraving and Italian-inspired makeup consultations, per NYC for FREE. Guests who opted for personalized engraving on their purchases received NYC-inspired icon designs, a nod to the brand's downtown Manhattan debut. Cosmetics Business separately reported that the celebration included free beauty products, personalized engraving and Italian-inspired makeup services as part of the same weekend rollout.
The SoHo shop is a New York City address for Kiko Milano. The company's growth plans include entering U.S. retailer Macy's, and per Cosmetics Business, Kiko Milano is set to open its next American store in Miami later in September, with a nightclub-like aesthetic planned for that location according to a company statement.
From Bankruptcy to a Madonna-Backed Comeback
The SoHo opening marks a striking turnaround from Kiko Milano's last major American retail chapter. The brand's U.S. subsidiary filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2018; at the time, Kiko USA operated 28 U.S. locations and one location in Puerto Rico and planned to shutter 24 remaining underperforming locations, as Cosmetics Business reported. The company also outlined a strategic plan to grow e-commerce and Amazon Prime offerings. Hoodline covered Kiko Milano's earlier New York footprint back in 2018, when its Midtown store made its NYC debut, not long before that broader collapse.
What has changed since then is the capital behind the brand. Private equity firm L Catterton acquired a 69% majority stake in Kiko Milano from the founding Percassi family in April 2024, in a deal valuing the company at roughly €1.4 billion, or about $1.5 billion, according to S&P Global Ratings; the Percassi family kept a 30% stake after the transaction. Kiko Milano, born in Milan, Italy, in 1997, remains Italy's leading color cosmetics brand with roughly 12.6% of the domestic beauty market, and Italy generated about 32% of its total sales in 2023.
The brand's American ambitions have also come with star power. Kiko Milano named singer Madonna as its global brand ambassador in June, featuring her in “The KIKO Show” promotional campaign. That same month, Kiko Milano made its national U.S. department store debut through a wholesale partnership with Macy's, launching nearly 650 products at the Herald Square flagship and online, complete with in-store beauty advisor guidance and on-site product engraving, per PR Newswire.
The Numbers Behind the Expansion
The brand introduces more than 250 new cosmetic products a year.
For SoHo shoppers, the immediate draw is simpler: a lilac-toned storefront built to look like it is staying put, in a neighborhood where beauty brands more often show up, throw a party and disappear.
