Downtown Los Angeles is starting Tuesday in the low 60s, but the calm morning will give way to sunshine and an afternoon high near 88 degrees. The bigger story is still ahead: a major heat wave is expected to build across the region, with weekend temperatures nearing 100 degrees.
Sunny, Warm Tuesday After Morning Clouds
Clouds will thin through the morning, leaving Los Angeles mostly sunny by late morning and afternoon. Northerly and offshore flow is expected, with north and east surface pressure gradients and local gusts up to 35 mph in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Rain is not expected.
Tuesday night will be mostly clear with a low around 65 degrees. Patchy low clouds may occur at Los Angeles beaches Wednesday, with a high around 86 degrees.
Coastal Hazards Continue Through Tuesday Afternoon
Beachgoers face a separate set of problems Tuesday, as a southerly swell brings elevated surf and a risk of shallow coastal flooding. The National Weather Service says surf around Los Angeles and Ventura counties could reach 4 to 7 feet, while high tides peak near 7 feet late Tuesday morning.
A Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory remain in effect through 5 p.m. Tuesday for vulnerable stretches of the coast. Low-lying beach walkways, parking lots and roads could see seawater overflow, with Long Beach, Malibu and Avalon among the areas of greatest concern.
Heat Builds Into A Hot Weekend
Thursday should be sunny and warmer, with a high near 90 degrees, followed by 92 degrees Friday. Over the weekend, temperatures are expected to vary between coastal areas and valleys as the heat event continues.
Monday will bring a few degrees of cooling as the ridge breaks down, though temperatures will remain at least 10 degrees above normal. With the hottest stretch arriving over the weekend, residents should plan for shade, hydration and extra care for children, older adults, pets and anyone working outdoors.
