LA28 organizers have unveiled preliminary triathlon courses for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, confirming that athletes will swim, bike and run through Venice Beach in a layout built around a shared finish line overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The courses include a central transition area near the beach where spectators can watch competitors move between swimming, cycling and running, and a flat, fast bike-and-run layout designed to encourage aggressive racing.
The ocean-based beach start planned for the Venice swim leg will mark only the second beach start in Olympic triathlon history, following Rio 2016, since most Olympic triathlons launch from floating pontoons or piers rather than sand, according to The Guardian. That detail underscores how unusual the Venice Beach setup is. As reported by The Mighty 790 KFGO, individual triathlon competitors will swim a 1.5-kilometer ocean course made up of a 1,000-meter lap, a beach run, and a final 500-meter lap before heading into transition.
From the Water to the Venice Canals
Once out of the surf, athletes will cycle eight 5-kilometer laps along the Venice Beach path and surrounding city streets, per the same KFGO account, before finishing with a run split into four laps totaling 10 kilometers through the Venice canals area. The mixed relay event, set for July 20, 2028, features teams of four athletes racing in alternating woman-man-woman-man order, with each leg covering a 350-meter swim, a 6.6-kilometer cycle and a 1.6-kilometer run.
The women's individual triathlon on July 15, 2028, is scheduled for just one day after LA28's dual-venue Opening Ceremony at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium on July 14, 2028, according to The Guardian, making it the first event to award medals at the Games. Hoodline previously reported that this opens LA28's medal program. The men's individual race follows on July 16, 2028, per KFGO.
A Venue Change That Caught Sport Officials Off Guard
Venice Beach was not always the plan. In April 2025, LA28 organizers unexpectedly relocated the triathlon venue 30 miles north from Long Beach to Venice Beach, catching national governing body USA Triathlon and sport officials off guard after six years of planning centered on Long Beach, according to Triathlete. Long Beach had been the planned venue, while an official described Venice Beach as an iconic backdrop, according to Triathlete.
The switch also folded triathlon into a broader vision for Venice Beach as a multi-sport endurance hub. The Guardian reports that LA28 has designated the neighborhood as the official starting location for the Olympic men's and women's marathons, the Paralympic marathon, and the Olympic road cycling races, alongside the triathlon program. Local civic leaders in L.A. City Council District 11 had campaigned to bring Olympic events to Venice Beach specifically to spotlight a beachfront that draws more than 10 million visitors annually, according to Triathlon Magazine Canada.
Paralympic Races and a Test Event Before 2028
The Paralympic individual triathlon races are scheduled for August 18-19, 2028, and will include competitors across six sport classes, per KFGO. Those races will feature a 750-meter swim starting from a barge positioned beyond the breakwater, followed by a 20-kilometer bike course and a 5-kilometer run, according to the same KFGO report.
Before the Games arrive, LA28 will test the new courses during a World Triathlon T50 Triathlon World Tour event in Venice scheduled for July 16-18, 2027.
Elite Athletes Are Already Studying the Surf
The unpredictable ocean conditions have already drawn elite scouting trips. Gwen Jorgensen attended a USA Triathlon open-water swim camp at Venice Beach as part of surf preparation, according to TRI247. Local lifeguards were also involved in the camp, which focused on local water conditions.
The Games also carry symbolic weight for the sport's home turf. Modern triathlon originated in Southern California in the 1970s, making LA28 something of a homecoming for the discipline. USA Triathlon has also moved to capitalize on the moment at home, launching a $28 million Elevate28 campaign in January 2026 to fund athlete development, adaptive sports access and national team preparation ahead of the Venice Beach Games, per USA Triathlon.
Qualification for the Venice Beach start line is already underway. The two-year Olympic qualification period for LA28 triathlon opened on May 18, 2026, and runs through May 18, 2028, capping the total field at 110 competitors split evenly between 55 men and 55 women, with a maximum of three athletes per nation, according to World Triathlon.
