Edd's & Flo's Artisan Bakery Cafe will pull its last espresso shots and pull the final loaves from the oven at 47 N. Queen St. on September 20, 2026, as owners Meghan Young and Sebastian Schuck close their downtown Lancaster storefront and relocate the business to Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood. The café currently operates Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon in the historic building it has called home since 2021.
The move was reported by LancasterOnline, whose report quotes Young saying that Lancaster has been an important part of the owners' journey but that the bakery was never meant to be their forever home. Young and Schuck, who are engaged, co-own the business together. Young previously lived in Philadelphia before relocating to Lancaster.
Young's roots in Philadelphia's food scene run deep. According to her bakery's own history, published on the Edd's & Flo's Artisan Bakery Cafe website, she earned an Associate's Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and worked at a string of notable Philadelphia hospitality venues, including High Street Hospitality, Essen Bakery, Defined Hospitality, Safran Turney Hospitality, Green Line Cafe, and One Shot Cafe, before ever opening a shop of her own. She had originally studied advertising at Temple University before changing careers to pursue baking.
From Pandemic Side Project to Downtown Storefront
The bakery's roots trace back to 2020, when Young began selling baked goods online during the pandemic. The venture grew into Wish You Well Bakery, a name that, per LancasterOnline's report, originated from the salutations Young wrote with each order. The physical storefront opened June 30, 2021, according to Voyage Baltimore, operating under a tip-free model that built living wages directly into menu prices rather than relying on gratuities.
Schuck brought his own hospitality background to the partnership. Before teaming up with Young, he spent six years working in specialty coffee and later tended bar at a Lancaster restaurant, where the two met in late 2019, according to Lancaster County Magazine. Schuck is a Lancaster native, and the pair built the business together through the upheaval of the pandemic years.
Why the Name Changed to Edd's & Flo's
In April 2024, after operating as Wish You Well Bakery for more than two and a half years, the business rebranded to Edd's & Flo's Artisan Bakery Cafe and briefly closed to install an espresso machine and add seating. The original name had caused confusion, with customers assuming it suggested a wellness-oriented or gluten-free bake shop rather than a scratch bakery and café. The new name draws from Young's childhood cats, who were themselves named for Flo & Eddie, the duo made up of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, founding members of The Turtles.
After the rebrand, the shop partnered with local roaster Square One Coffee to offer espresso and brewed coffee alongside scratch pastries made with locally milled flour and regional produce, cementing its identity as a full-service café rather than just a bakery counter.
A Storefront With a History of Turnover
The storefront at 47 N. Queen St. has a track record of housing local food concepts: Super Bread Columbian Bakery occupied the space around 2015, and Harvest Moon Bagel Co. opened its storefront there in August 2019 before Edd's & Flo's took over in 2021.
Downtown Lancaster's core around Penn Square already holds a dense concentration of independent cafes and bakeries, including long-standing names like Prince Street Cafe and Cafe One Eight, per Visit Lancaster PA. Edd's & Flo's departure leaves an opening in that competitive local scene, though who might lease the storefront next remains unclear.
Fishtown's Draw for Independent Bakers
The relocation lands the business in Fishtown, a major culinary and redevelopment center with independently owned businesses, as noted by Forbes. Manna Bakery has announced plans for a permanent Fishtown location.
Edd's & Flo's will close its Lancaster doors on September 20, giving loyal customers a few remaining weekends to stop by before the shop begins its next chapter in Philadelphia. Details on a specific Fishtown address and opening timeline have not yet been announced.
