A 33-year-old Laredo mother is behind bars after her 2-year-old daughter was found wandering alone outside a South Laredo apartment complex, prompting police to uncover troubling conditions inside the family's home. Bianca Carolina Villarreal was arrested Monday and now faces a felony child endangerment charge along with a drug possession count and two outstanding warrants.
According to the Laredo Morning Times, Laredo Police Department officers responded to the 3400 block of South New York Avenue at about 10:55 a.m. Monday after a good Samaritan discovered Villarreal's daughter alone outside the complex. That stretch of South New York Avenue sits between Ireland Street and Frees Street, along the boundary of the South View and South Gate neighborhoods, as reported by El Mañana.
Once inside the residence, officers observed concerning living conditions, the Laredo Morning Times reported. Police also found an unlabeled cylindrical prescription container holding various unprescribed pills, according to the same account from the paper's report by Jose de la Rosa.
Charges Stack Up Alongside Old Warrants
Villarreal was charged with abandoning or endangering a child with intent to return, a state jail felony under Texas Penal Code § 22.041, according to the outlet's report. She was also charged with possession of less than 28 grams of a Penalty Group 3 controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor. Under state law, that felony carries a punishment range of 180 days to two years in a state jail facility and a fine of up to $10,000, per FindLaw, while the misdemeanor drug count carries up to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $4,000.
Penalty Group 3 substances include prescription-only depressants, stimulants, and sedatives such as alprazolam, diazepam, and methylphenidate when possessed without a valid prescription, according to the Texas Constitution and Statutes. On top of the new charges, Villarreal was served with two outstanding Webb County Sheriff's Office warrants; the specific nature of those warrants has not been detailed publicly. She was booked into the Webb County Jail and remained held as of Tuesday morning.
