Charles Henry Thompson Jr. was sentenced to serve 50 years and six months in prison for a 2024 shooting and robbery in Lexington Park. The case is one of several reported Southern Maryland attacks involving a former partner’s new boyfriend, though the incidents span different decades, places and outcomes.
In a separate 2019 case, James Walter Gross Jr. of St. Leonard pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder after shooting at a house in Calvert County in an effort to harm his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, Southern Maryland News reported. A 2008 attack at a former girlfriend’s Lexington Park home ended in a fatal shooting of her boyfriend, according to The Washington Post. These are separate cases, not evidence by themselves of an increase in such violence.
Thompson, 32, was convicted by a jury in December 2025 after a five-day trial. The jury found him guilty of first-degree assault, armed robbery, firearm offenses, theft and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, The BayNet reported. His total sentence was 95 years and six months, with all but 50 years and six months suspended, leaving that active prison term.
The case began on Oct. 30, 2024, when deputies responded to a shooting report near Valley Estates Drive in Lexington Park. Prosecutors said Thompson and a co-defendant went to a home where Thompson’s former girlfriend and another man were visiting, and that Thompson shot, assaulted and robbed the man. The BayNet reported the incident and case proceedings; the available accounts do not establish how the current case was connected to the earlier incidents.
