Long Beach police are seeking the driver of a white pickup truck after a woman was struck in a crosswalk at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street on Friday evening and later died at a hospital. The death came amid a year in which the city has continued to record fatal traffic collisions: NBC Los Angeles reported that the crash was Long Beach’s 39th fatal collision of the year and the city’s eighth traffic-related fatality that month.
Those figures describe the scale of the local toll, but they do not by themselves establish a year-over-year trend. The Long Beach Post reported that the city recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions in 2025, the most in more than a decade. That full-year count is not directly comparable with the current year-to-date figure.
The city’s stated target is different from simply reducing a count: Long Beach says its Safe Streets program aims for zero traffic fatalities or severe injuries. That is a broad safety goal, not a finding about what caused Friday’s collision or whether any particular street feature played a role.
What is known about the crash
According to NBC Los Angeles, the woman was walking north through the marked crosswalk around 7:20 p.m. when a pickup traveling south attempted a left turn onto Burnett Street and hit her. The truck continued east on Burnett Street, leaving the woman in the roadway. Her identity had not been released as of Sunday.
The cause remains under investigation, and police have not publicly identified a driver or released further suspect information, NBC reported. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday. The details available do not establish why the collision occurred.
A separate local case offers a limited comparison
A previous Long Beach fatal hit-and-run had a different outcome: the Press-Telegram reported that a driver who fled on foot after a fatal crash near 14th Street and Cherry Avenue in August 2024 was later located and arrested. That was a separate, two-vehicle crash, so it does not indicate what will happen in the Baltic Avenue investigation.
