
Lead was detected above New York’s school drinking-water action level at fixtures in dozens of Long Island school districts, according to accounts based on New York Department of Health records. The findings cover Nassau and Suffolk counties, but the exact district total varies by account: PIX11 reported nearly 40 Suffolk districts and more than 20 Nassau districts, while the Citizens Campaign for the Environment reported slightly higher figures.
The difference matters because the reports do not establish one definitive count of affected districts, schools or individual fixtures. What they do show is a broad set of positive faucet and fountain tests under New York’s current standard, with results spanning both counties. A complete district-by-district account of every affected outlet and test result is not included in the reporting cited here.
A lower action level changes the comparison
New York’s school drinking-water action level is now 5 micrograms per liter, or parts per billion, down from 15 parts per billion, according to the Citizens Campaign for the Environment. That change means a fixture can now require action at a concentration that previously fell below the state’s threshold. The current results therefore should not be presented, without fixture-level historical data, as proof that lead contamination has increased by the same amount.
The state response is focused on the individual outlet. According to PIX11 and the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, districts must take fixtures exceeding the limit out of service, provide an alternative source of drinking water, notify families and staff, and carry out corrective work followed by additional testing. Depending on the fixture, that work can include repairs, replacement or permanently shutting off the outlet.
The current findings follow an earlier testing cycle
Long Island has faced school lead-water findings before the current round. In May 2016, WSHU reported that six Long Island school districts had found elevated lead levels and that at least 32 schools had begun testing plans. That episode was a separate testing effort, so it provides historical context rather than a direct measurement of change between 2016 and the current results.
The Southampton Union Free School District says that, after the initial 2016 testing, schools were required to test every outlet every five years, or sooner if directed by the state health commissioner. That recurring schedule helps explain why older findings and new sampling rounds can appear at different times, but the available context does not show whether the same fixtures failed in both periods or whether the current positives are concentrated in newly tested outlets.
A positive fixture test is not the same as a contaminated regional supply
Lead detected at a school faucet or fountain can come from plumbing or solder inside the building. The Nassau County Department of Health says lead in water can result from contact with lead plumbing or lead solder, so a fixture-level result does not by itself show that the regional water source is contaminated.
Separate infrastructure data show that lead remains a concern in parts of the region, but those records should not be combined with the school testing totals. Newsday’s analysis of state data found more than 11,000 Nassau County homes and a small number in Suffolk connected through old lead service lines. The same analysis reported that Suffolk suppliers had identified 11 lead lines, five galvanized lines requiring replacement and about 6,100 lines of unknown material. Those are water-supplier and residential-service-line records, not evidence that the school fixtures were supplied by contaminated mains.
For families, the immediate question is therefore local: which outlets failed, whether they have been removed from use and whether follow-up tests cleared them. The state-level and public reporting cited here establish the breadth of the issue and the applicable response, but they do not resolve every school’s fixture-level status or show whether the lower threshold, broader sampling or building plumbing best explains the variation among districts.
