Six softball games spread across Lorain, Elyria and Oberlin this weekend will do more than crown a champion — they'll retrace the routes of Black baseball teams that barnstormed Lorain County a century ago. The L.E.O. Black History Alliance will host the third annual Black Bat Softball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Oberlin Rec Center.
The tournament, first reported by the Morning Journal, celebrates the region's Black baseball history, friendly competition and unity among the three cities. Games will honor three historic squads: the Lorain Black Diamond, the Elyria Smart Set and the Oberlin Tuck's Stars, names that trace back to a genuinely vibrant sandlot scene. Lorain County had numerous Black baseball teams during the 1910s and 1920s, and those games regularly attracted hundreds of spectators, according to the same report.
Those matchups were about more than final scores. Black baseball team games became vital sources of fellowship within the Black community during that era, per the Morning Journal, giving people across Lorain, Elyria and Oberlin a reason to gather regardless of which city they called home. A separate 2024 account of the tournament's origins, reported by morningjournal.com, put it plainly: “their games were a time for Black communities to fellowship across city lines.”
Weekend Schedule Runs Through Three Cities
Saturday's slate opens with the Lorain Black Diamond facing the Oberlin Tuck's Stars at 9:30 a.m. on Field 1 at Oberlin Rec Center, 224 Hamilton St. The action then shifts to Lorain, where the Elyria Smart Set takes on the Lorain Black Diamond at 1:30 p.m. on Field 2 at Oakwood Park, 2047 E. 36th St. The day wraps up in Elyria, with the Oberlin Tuck's Stars meeting the Elyria Smart Set at 5:30 p.m. on Field 4 at West Park, 1200 Foster Ave.
Sunday's games move to Oberlin Rec Center for the remainder of the bracket. A semifinal pitting the No. 3 seed against the No. 2 seed begins at 10 a.m., setting up a 4:30 p.m. championship game between that winner and the No. 1 seed. If a rematch is needed to settle the title, a sixth game will follow immediately after the championship at the same location, according to the schedule reported by the Morning Journal.
A Chance to Celebrate and Learn Local History
Ethan West, who is a member of an organization within the L.E.O. Black History Alliance and is described as founder of the Elyria Black Legacy Connection, said the tournament provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn local history. The tournament remains free to spectators of all ages and will include food and music throughout the weekend, per the Morning Journal's report.
Donations collected during the event will support the L.E.O. Black History Alliance's work to preserve and share Lorain County's Black history, per the news release cited by the Morning Journal. The 2024 edition of the tournament drew similar community backing, with partner organizations including the Lorain Black History project at the Lorain Historical Society, the Elyria Black Legacy Connection and the Oberlin African-American Genealogy & History Group, according to that year's coverage.
Ahead of the weekend, the Lorain Historical Society used LinkedIn to rally players for Lorain's roster, writing, “We need you to help us honor Lorain County's heritage of sandlots, players, families and community pride by playing on Lorain's team.” In a separate post, the organization urged residents to “Register today to play on Lorain's team in The LEO Black History Alliance 3rd annual Black Bat Softball Tournament September 26 & 27, 2026!”
Trophy Bat Tradition Keeps Rivalry Alive
Past tournaments have carried a physical stake for bragging rights. In 2024, the winning team earned the right to display a trophy bat somewhere in its home city until the following year's tournament, per the Morning Journal's account of that competition. The rivalry has stayed tight; a YouTube recap of the tournament's second year reported that Elyria's Smart Set swept the Lorain Black Diamond to win that title, though that outcome is drawn from a search-result snippet rather than a fully verified box score.
