Messhall Kitchen, the Los Feliz restaurant known for its camp-lodge decor, patio fire pits and dollar-oyster Tuesdays, will permanently close its doors on October 17 after 14 years in business. The restaurant, housed in the historic building at 4500 Los Feliz Boulevard that once held the Los Feliz Brown Derby, has not given a public reason for the shutdown.
Messhall announced the closure on social media, thanking the community and its team for years of support, according to Yahoo. The restaurant invited regulars to “raise a glass” during its final month, giving longtime customers and staff a chance for one more meal before the lights go out for good. As WhatNow reported, the restaurant made its name serving regional American dining and comfort food, from the Mess Burger with cheddar and caramelized onions to smoked baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, steak and grilled salmon, alongside cocktails, draft beer and wine.
The property carries decades of Los Angeles restaurant history. Before Messhall moved in, the space was home to Willard's Chicken Inn and later the Los Feliz outpost of the Brown Derby, according to Messhall Kitchen’s own account of the building's past. The restaurant leaned into that legacy with a covered patio, bar, outdoor seating and communal-style tables that made it a neighborhood gathering spot for brunch, lunch and dinner.
Dollar Oysters and a Loyal Following
Tuesdays were the main event at Messhall, when the kitchen ran one-dollar oysters, per pleasethepalate.com's rundown of the menu. The restaurant also served fresh oysters.
The restaurant did not give a reason for the sudden shuttering. Online, longtime patrons have been sharing farewell messages and emotional tributes since the news broke. One customer wrote, “Such a special place. I feel lucky to have been part of the Messhall family,” while another posted, “Nooooooo!!! Omg this makes me so sad.” A third summed up what the restaurant meant to the neighborhood: “I made so many lifelong friends at Messhall, from coworkers to customers.”
Another Casualty in a Rough Year for LA Dining
Messhall's closure adds to a grim stretch for Los Angeles restaurants. Eater LA noted that owners across the city continue to operate on razor-thin margins amid rising labor, rent and ingredient costs, lingering effects of the Hollywood strikes, the 2025 fires and immigration enforcement. That same report tracked a string of closures in the weeks before Messhall's announcement, including Sky's Gourmet Tacos shutting its Mid-City dining room on August 15 to pivot to catering, the Escondite pouring its last beer in Skid Row on August 30, the Vegan Joint closing all three of its locations after more than two decades, and the Belmont.
The pressure isn't new. The Los Angeles Times reported that more than 100 restaurants closed across the city in 2025 alone, ranging from Michelin-starred dining rooms to neighborhood favorites, as wildfires, tariffs, immigration raids and shrinking tourism compounded years of inflation and rising costs. Blue Plate Oysterette had already announced plans to close in early 2026, while A.O.C. Brentwood cited losses from the January fires and a slowdown in entertainment-industry production, and Culver City's Akasha pointed to strikes, the pandemic and rising labor and food costs when its owners made their decision.
For now, Messhall Kitchen is asking regulars to come back one more time before October 17. Whatever ultimately closed the doors on this Los Feliz staple, the outpouring from customers suggests the restaurant leaves behind more than just empty barstools and a shuttered patio.
