Louisville's West End is about to get a taste of national track and field spotlight. USA Track & Field has picked the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center to host a stop on its brand-new indoor tour, with the sprint-focused PNC Lenny Lyles Open set for January 29-30, 2027.
USA Track & Field announced the inaugural 2027 USATF Indoor Tour on September 16, unveiling six independently operated meets spread across the country, according to WLKY. Beyond Louisville, the circuit will make stops in New York, Kansas, North Carolina and Boston, per the station's report. USATF is covering the costs of drug testing, technical delegates, sanctioning and insurance for each meet, according to USA Track & Field.
The full schedule kicks off with the NYC Indoor Grand Prix on January 22-23, followed by the PNC Lenny Lyles Open in Louisville and the K-State DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas, on January 29-30. The ASICS Sound Invite in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is scheduled for January 31, according to USA Track & Field. The tour then moves to the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on February 6 before wrapping with the Millrose Games in New York on February 13.
A Fast Track Built on Reclaimed Industrial Land
The Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center brings serious infrastructure to the table: a 200-meter banked Mondo indoor track promoted as one of the fastest surfaces in the world, according to the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
The facility opened in February 2021 on 24 acres in the Russell neighborhood, built by the Louisville Urban League on a brownfield site, according to WHAS11. Turning a brownfield site into a major regional athletic center gave the West End a facility that has since grown into a hub for high-level indoor competition.
From Campus Meet to National Stop
The PNC Lenny Lyles Open appeared on the University of Louisville's 2026 track-and-field schedule, according to University of Louisville Athletics.
The meet is named for Lenny Lyles.
The Road to Indianapolis
Every stop on the tour feeds into the same destination: the 2027 USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for February 19-21, 2027 at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, according to USA Track & Field. As Hoodline previously reported, the fairgrounds venue was converted from a swine barn, and its 118,000-square-foot main floor features a removable 200-meter banked Beynon track that opened in early 2024.
The 2027 championship also carries a historical marker: it lands on the 40th anniversary of the inaugural 1987 IAAF World Indoor Championships, which were hosted in Indianapolis at the former Hoosier Dome, according to FloTrack. USATF also coordinated with meet organizers to align the tour's calendar with the World Athletics ranking system, according to USA Track & Field.
