A runner named John collapsed near the finish line of Louisville's Pure Tap 5K last year, suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in front of fellow racers and volunteers. Off-duty first responders who happened to be running the race that day rushed in to begin chest compressions before Louisville Metro EMS crews arrived and took over, ultimately restoring his pulse. This week, John returned to the same race to hug and thank the people who kept him alive.

, the emergency unfolded near the finish line of the Pure Tap 5K, where an off-duty firefighter was first to start chest compressions before Louisville Metro EMS personnel took over the resuscitation and got John's heart beating again. The agency's post credited several off-duty first responders who happened to be attending the race for stepping in immediately, well before an ambulance could arrive. John reunited with those responders at this year's race, according to the same agency.
A Reunion Years in the Making
Louisville Metro EMS also recognized three of its own for the save: Major Lokits, EMT Barrios and EMT Speed were given distinguished citizen commendations by Mayor Craig Greenberg for resuscitating John, the agency said. The recognition turned what began as a medical crisis into a lasting bond between a survivor and the crew that treated him, with John making a point of returning to the starting line where his heart had once stopped.
A Louisville Institution Along the River
The Pure Tap 5K is one of the four events in the Planet Fitness Mayorthon Race Series, a civic initiative Mayor Greenberg launched in 2024, according to Louisville Metro Government. This year's edition ran on August 29 at Louisville Water Tower Park, and it sold out for the third consecutive year running. The course is part of the event at the park.
The Pure Tap 5K was held in September 2021, according to the Louisville Sports Commission. The event also reflects the importance of planning for runners' safety.
