A portable baby sleep machine sold at Target, Walmart and Nordstrom stores nationwide, including in California, has been recalled after the manufacturer found its lithium-ion battery can overheat and spark fires. Roughly 4,000 units nationwide of the Love to Dream Portable Sleep Machine were sold between February 2025 and this September for about $60 each, and the company says the defect creates a risk of fire and serious burns.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published the recall, numbered 26-798, on Thursday, September 24, covering the approximately 4,000 units distributed across the country, according to the CPSC. The federal agency says the battery can overheat when used with an incompatible charger, and Love to Dream has said overheating and fire can cause serious burns or property damage, as reported by the Sacramento Bee.
The recalled machine, identified by Love to Dream branding and a brown handle, plays various sounds through an adjustable volume, includes a built-in nightlight, and charges via a USB cable. Affected units carry model number LTD-SM23 and date code 7W15TN, printed on the side of the machine or the back of the box, per the Sacramento Bee's reporting on the recall. The machines were also sold online through Love to Dream's own site, Amazon, Babylist and Posh Mommy.
What Owners Are Required to Do
Consumers are told to stop using and unplug the recalled machine immediately. To get a full refund or store credit, owners must register the device using its model number and date code, and Love to Dream requires them to write RECALL across the front of the machine in permanent black marker before confirming proper disposal, according to the same CPSC notice.
That disposal step is not simple. Federal guidelines explicitly bar tossing the recalled lithium-ion device into household trash, curbside recycling bins, or retail battery drop-boxes, instructing consumers instead to use local household hazardous-waste facilities, the CPSC notes. Families are advised to call ahead to confirm a facility will accept the device, since consumers must follow local requirements for disposing of lithium-ion products before any refund is processed.
California's Responsible Battery Recycling Act of 2022, known as AB 2440, and Senate Bill 501 establish a program for covered batteries, including certain loose batteries. A separate fee program for battery-embedded products is under Senate Bill 1215, according to The National Law Review. That battery framework sits alongside the federal disposal warning for California parents navigating this recall.
A Company Built on Swaddles, Now in Smart Nursery Tech
Love to Dream launched the Sleep Machine in February 2025 as its first electronic nursery device, featuring auto cry-detection, a 30-second custom voice recording feature and a 22-hour rechargeable battery, per the original product announcement carried on PR Newswire. The recall also arrived roughly two weeks after United Kingdom regulators acted. The UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards issued its own recall on September 10, identifying three affected date codes — 7T12TN, 7W15TN and 8P01TN — sold through retailers including Boots, Harrods and John Lewis, according to GOV.UK. The U.S. notice covers only the LTD-SM23 model and the 7W15TN date code, a narrower scope than the UK action.
Part of a Broader Battery Safety Crackdown
Love to Dream's recall was one of several lithium-ion battery actions the CPSC announced the same day, alongside a recall of 51,000 Blue Cactus recliner battery packs and more than 21,000 NEWDERY power banks, as detailed by KARE 11. The NEWDERY power bank recall alone involved nine accounts of devices exploding or igniting, including one incident that caused $2 million in property damage and a burn injury, the station reported. Other baby-product recalls have involved infant car seats, a teething toy, infant walkers and a fire truck-themed toy.
Consumers who own the affected Love to Dream Sleep Machine can register for the recall at the company's dedicated recall page using the unit's model number and date code to begin the refund or store-credit process.
