A 39-year-old man is recovering after he was stabbed in the torso while walking along West Commerce Street near Richter just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday, in what the victim described as an attack for no reason. The suspect fled before officers arrived.
San Antonio Police responded to reports of a fight involving a knife in the 1300 block of West Commerce Street, according to WOAI. Officers found the victim with a stab wound and learned he told investigators he had been attacked for no reason as he walked along the street, per the outlet's account of the police report. Medics transported him to the hospital, and police confirmed his injuries are not life threatening.
A Corridor With a History of Redevelopment Talk
West Commerce Street is a corridor where merchants and city officials have long debated public safety, unhoused services and redevelopment, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The corridor connects downtown directly to the city's historic West Side. That same stretch of West Commerce has seen violence before: on September 2, Hoodline reported a stabbing near Elmendorf Lake, when a confrontation that began in a park migrated to the 4300 block of the same street, several miles from Saturday's attack.
If a suspect is identified and charged, Texas law treats an assault committed with a knife as Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to FindLaw.
Citywide Crime Numbers Fall Even as Downtown Incidents Mount
The stabbing lands amid a broader public safety picture that has been trending downward. An evaluation of San Antonio's Violent Crime Reduction Plan by University of Texas at San Antonio criminologists found violent street crime fell 21.1% citywide in 2025 compared to 2024, with aggravated assaults dropping 19.8%, according to the San Antonio Report. The same UTSA research found SAPD's targeted hot-spot policing strategy achieved a 63.2% reduction in violent street crime across designated high-risk blocks during 2025, with those blocks assigned 60-day police coverage cycles.
A Council on Criminal Justice analysis released in July found San Antonio homicides fell an additional 8% in the first half of 2026 compared to 2025, pushing the city's murder rate 12% below pre-pandemic levels, the San Antonio Report also reported. Separately, earlier in September, police arrested a 19-year-old suspect for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a violent attempted robbery at Civic Park at Hemisfair left a victim with a gunshot wound to the face, as reported by KENS 5.
