A 44-year-old man was slashed in the face with a sharp object outside 735 East Tremont Avenue late on Sept. 3, according to police, after an assailant crept up from behind and struck him around 11:30 p.m. The man was rushed to a hospital by EMS, and the attacker took off on foot, running north on Prospect Avenue into the night.
The victim sustained injuries from the slashing and was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, as reported by News12 New York. Police are looking for the man responsible, per News12's reporting.
The attack unfolded along East Tremont Avenue, which includes storefronts like the clothing retailer Denim Joint, according to Loc8NearMe. That stretch of East Tremont Avenue sits after-hours in an area that otherwise bustles with shoppers during the day, making the late-night ambush all the more jarring for a corridor that depends on foot traffic.
A Corridor With a Troubling Pattern
This isn't the first blade attack on this stretch of East Tremont Avenue. In April, a teenage boy was ambushed and slashed in the neck while walking home along the same corridor, a case Hoodline covered at the time. The Sept. 3 slashing also fits into a broader run of sharp-object assaults across the Bronx this year. In August, a subway rider was slashed in Mt. Eden — an incident Hoodline has also reported on, part of what appears to be an ongoing public safety challenge for the borough.
Police Appeal for Tips as Precinct Faces Pressure
Police have asked anyone with information to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The program offers anonymous cash rewards of up to $3,500 for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment in felony assault cases, a structure Hoodline detailed in its coverage of a separate Bronx Park East slashing last month.
The crime scene falls within the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 48th Precinct, which patrols East Tremont, Belmont, and West Farms from its stationhouse on Cross Bronx Expressway, according to the NYPD.
