A man was detained Saturday after a white vehicle went onto the sidewalk near the security barrier at 16th and H streets NW by Lafayette Square. The driver was later seen in handcuffs and was reported to have been seeking a conversation with President Donald Trump, according to The Mirror US.
Police response
Secret Service officers and Metropolitan Police Department officers went to the area, with military personnel also responding, according to the New York Post. Roads around the scene were closed as a precaution, and a search of the vehicle found nothing, the Post reported.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation, the Post reported, citing a Secret Service spokesperson. The president was at Camp David rather than the White House, according to the Post’s account, which also cited The Irish Sun.
The Secret Service expressed appreciation for its officers’ response and for the Metropolitan Police Department’s assistance, according to the Post. The driver has not been publicly identified, the evaluation’s outcome has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed.
