A man is dead after a shooting Monday afternoon on a quiet townhouse street in Upper Marlboro, and Prince George's County homicide detectives have not yet released any information about who pulled the trigger. Patrol officers responded around 12:05 p.m. to the 500 block of Mount Lubentia Court East, where they found an adult male suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to WBFF, the Prince George's County Police Department is investigating the shooting, and as of the station's report, police had not released a description of the shooter. The 500 block of Mount Lubentia Court East sits within a townhouse community carrying an Upper Marlboro mailing address, according to a property listing for the block. The complex was developed in the mid-1980s in the Northampton area of unincorporated Prince George's County, off Maryland Route 202, per the Maryland Historical Trust, which notes the area takes its name from Mount Lubentia, an 18th-century estate listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
No Suspect Description Released
Investigators have not publicly identified a motive or a suspect in Monday's shooting. This is not the first time gun violence has touched the Mount Lubentia corridor. In January 1998, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot in the head in the 600 block of Mount Lubentia Court West after a gunman chased him into a wooded area behind the townhouses, according to a Washington Post account from that period. Nearly a decade earlier, in April 1990, a pizza delivery driver was shot and killed on Mount Lubentia Way during an attempted armed robbery, a case that later resulted in a first-degree felony murder conviction according to Maryland appellate court records.
Homicides Trending Down Countywide
Monday's killing comes as Prince George's County has recorded a significant multi-year decline in violent crime. Through August 26, the county had logged 25 murders year-to-date in 2026, a 46 percent drop from the 46 murders recorded over the same period in 2025, according to the Prince George's County Police Department's Daily Crime Report. Non-fatal shootings have also fallen, with 85 recorded through late August compared to 120 during the same stretch last year.
The county closed out 2025 with 58 homicides, a 41 percent drop from the 99 homicides recorded in 2024 and the first time the county's annual homicide count fell below 100 since 2020, according to WUSA9. That report also noted overall violent crime in the county dropped 21 percent in 2025 compared to the prior year. Officials credited the trend in part to expanded public safety investments announced in late 2025, including a Real-Time Crime Center and a co-responder program pairing mental health clinicians with patrol officers, initiatives spearheaded by County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Police Chief George Nader.
Recent Enforcement in the Area
PGPD's Homicide Unit has made arrests in other nearby cases this year. In January 2026, detectives arrested and charged a 26-year-old Upper Marlboro resident with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in an Upper Marlboro shopping center parking lot; that same suspect was also charged with three non-fatal shootings that occurred the same day.
