A man is dead after officers found him shot on the 9300 block of 19th Avenue in Adelphi late Tuesday night, prompting a road closure that lasted into the early morning hours. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. Homicide detectives are now trying to figure out who pulled the trigger and why.
Police said officers responded to the scene at approximately 10:45 p.m. after reports of a shooting, according to WJLA. Officers found the man outside suffering from gunshot wounds before medics took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As of 12:45 a.m., 19th Avenue between Adelphi Road and Fox Street remained closed while investigators worked the scene.
At the scene, DC News Now reported that police tape blocked the parking lot of an apartment complex while a forensic team arrived and detectives continued their work. The outlet's contributor Larry Calhoun was on scene as investigators processed the area. The victim's name had not yet been released, and the station's report noted the motive behind the shooting remained unclear.
Detectives Still Searching for a Suspect
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit is now working to identify a suspect or suspects and determine a motive, per the same account from WJLA. No arrests had been announced as of the latest information available. Part of a String of Recent Shootings in the County
Tuesday night's shooting is one of several fatal gun violence cases Prince George's County has seen this year. In February, police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside a stairwell of an apartment complex, and he was pronounced dead at the scene; he was later identified as 48-year-old Curtis Thornton Jr. of Capitol Heights, according to WJLA.
In another case, a Sunday morning shooting left a man dead outside the Ashton Heights apartment complex in Suitland, according to DC News Now, which identified the victim as 32-year-old Brandon Foulks of Suitland. And on August 31, a man died after a shooting in the 500 block of Mount Lubentia Court in Upper Marlboro, with FOX45 Baltimore reporting that police had not released a description of a shooter in that case either.
No further details about the Adelphi shooting, including the victim's identity or a possible motive, have been released. Detectives continue to investigate as the search for answers continues.
