An unidentified man is dead after being shot multiple times near a playground at the Cherry Hill Homes community in Baltimore. Officers responded to a call for a gunshot around 7:40 p.m. and found the victim unresponsive, suffering from what police described as numerous life-threatening wounds. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to The Baltimore Banner, homicide detectives are investigating and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to help determine the circumstances of the man's death. The exact location of the shooting has been reported inconsistently: the Banner places it in the rear of the 2700 block of Spelman Road, near a playground and basketball court, while a separate report from usa.liveuamap.com describes the fatal crime as occurring at an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Spelman Road. Both accounts agree the shooting happened near a playground within the Cherry Hill Homes affordable housing community.
Photos from the scene, as reported by WBFF, show officers had placed red and yellow tape around an area next to the playground, with a body visible beneath a white sheet. A forensics investigator climbed to the top of the playground's jungle gym to get a high-angle view of the investigation, while a crime lab technician collected and photographed evidence at the scene. Homicide detective Nigel Rose and homicide detective sergeant Matthew Tobjy were seen preparing to enter the crime scene, per the outlet's report. WBFF said it is working to gather additional information.
A Neighborhood Already on Edge
The fatal shooting adds to a string of violence that has rattled Cherry Hill in recent months. Just last week, on September 9, a 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting in the neighborhood, according to Fox Baltimore, which reported that the shooting happened in the 1200 block of Shellbanks Road in south Baltimore. It is not established whether that shooting is connected to the fatal one near the playground.
Cherry Hill has also seen deadlier violence this year. A May 30 shooting in the 2900 block of Spelman Road killed 21-year-old Tyriel Simms and wounded another 21-year-old man, Hoodline previously reported. And in a separate case, a 31-year-old Cherry Hill woman, Nichole George, was arrested and charged after police said she shot an 11-year-old boy and his mother at a playground on Seagull Avenue, according to WMAR-2 News.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
The repeated violence in Cherry Hill stands somewhat apart from Baltimore's broader crime trend this year. As of early August, the city had recorded 60 homicides, a 25.9 percent year-over-year decline, Hoodline has reported. That citywide drop offers little comfort to Cherry Hill residents who have now seen multiple shootings within the same stretch of blocks in just a few months.
No suspect, arrest, or motive has been announced in connection with the fatal shooting near the playground. Homicide detectives continue to investigate, and further details are expected as the medical examiner's findings and the police investigation progress.
