A man was killed in a shooting near an apartment complex on the 1700 block of January Drive in White Oak, Maryland, Thursday afternoon, and police say no suspect was taken into custody. Montgomery County police reported that officers were called to the scene shortly after the shooting broke out. Four people were detained during a search warrant at a nearby apartment.
According to FOX 5 DC, the man was found dead following the shooting, which Montgomery County police confirmed occurred in the White Oak area. Police reported that the shooting occurred at about 2:05 p.m. Responding officers and fire-rescue crews arrived at the scene, where homicide detectives from the Major Crimes Division set up a perimeter and conducted a K-9 track, according to Daily Voice. No one has been charged, although four people were detained during a search warrant at a nearby apartment. The identity of the victim, a motive, and any suspect description remain unknown.
A Break in the County's Homicide Count
The killing marks Montgomery County's 10th homicide of 2026 and the first recorded in the county since late June, according to reporting by The Baltimore Banner. That prior case occurred on June 21 and led to the June 25 arrest of 39-year-old Sean Robinson on first-degree murder charges in the death of 37-year-old Ashlei Jones in Gaithersburg, per the same account.
The break of roughly two months without a homicide in the county makes Thursday's shooting stand out, even as it adds to a troubling pattern on this specific stretch of January Drive. The same block was the site of another shooting on June 12, when an adult male was shot and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after police responded to a 1:16 p.m. call, according to The MoCo Show.
3rd District Command Covers White Oak
White Oak falls under the jurisdiction of the Montgomery County Police Department's 3rd District, which operates out of a station at 1002 Milestone Drive in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery Community Media. That station was relocated in 2014 to centrally cover the Route 29 corridor, the outlet reports.
The White Oak homicide follows another recent case in the area: Hoodline previously reported on a Burtonsville man charged with hiring a hitman in a Silver Spring murder investigation tied to the nearby White Oak commercial area.

Should investigators identify and charge a suspect, Maryland law lays out steep consequences for a first-degree murder conviction. Under Maryland Code Criminal Law § 2-201, the offense is punishable strictly by imprisonment for life, with or without the possibility of parole, according to Justia. Maryland officially abolished capital punishment in 2013.
If a firearm was used, Maryland Code Criminal Law § 4-204 adds a mandatory minimum sentence of five years without parole, up to a 20-year maximum, to be served consecutively to any underlying murder conviction, per the same source.
