A man who evaded a traffic stop ended up trapped on the roof of a house in northwest Harris County, triggering a standoff that brought SWAT teams to a quiet residential block near Antoine Drive and West Mount Houston Road.
According to KHOU, the suspect initially fled a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable while riding an electric bicycle before officers tracked him down on the roof of a residence in the 6000 block of Downwood Forest Drive. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez
confirmed on social media that Precinct 1 deputies and Harris County Sheriff's Office SWAT members were on-scene, describing a man who evaded deputies during a traffic stop and was now refusing to come down from a rooftop near the intersection.
The standoff drew a multi-agency response from Precinct 1 deputies and the county's SWAT team, per the station's report.
A Residential Block With a History
The standoff played out in Inwood North, a single-family residential subdivision in the 77088 ZIP code that sits near the intersection of Antoine Drive and West Mount Houston Road, according to property records on HAR.com. The neighborhood, established around 1980, isn't unfamiliar with serious police activity — Precinct 1 deputies responded to an armed home invasion on the same block of Downwood Forest Drive back in March 2020, when five armed suspects forced their way into a home, as FOX 26 Houston reported at the time.
The corridor has seen its share of law enforcement activity recently. Hoodline previously reported that a traffic stop along nearby Antoine Drive escalated into gunfire when HPD shot a suspect in December. Antoine Drive itself is a commuter corridor bordering Downwood Forest.
