A man was found dead in a body of water at 1001 West Loop South, also known as West Interstate Highway 610 South, at about 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, according to Houston police. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene, and investigators said his body showed no obvious signs of trauma.

The man's identity remains pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, according to a report from City of Houston News. The investigation is now centered on determining his cause of death, which is expected to come from an autopsy. HPD Homicide Division Sergeants J. Campbell and Detective H. Montealegre are handling the case, which has been assigned case number 123526626.

Investigators Await Cause of Death

As of Wednesday, no cause of death had been released, and the report gave no indication of foul play or an ongoing threat tied to the discovery. Anyone with information is asked to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600, per the same report.

This is not the first time a body has turned up in Houston-area waterways in recent memory. Back in April, police recovered a body from Buffalo Bayou near Marcario Garcia Drive and Buffalo Bend Nature Park, a case that Click2Houston reported marked at least the fifth body found in Houston-area bayous since the start of that year. In that case, investigators believed the unidentified person was a Black man between 40 and 50 years old with an average build, and homicide detectives said there were no clear signs of foul play. The body was transferred to the medical examiner's office to determine cause of death.

A Pattern of Pending Answers

The Buffalo Bayou case is far from isolated. Houston-area bayous saw 35 bodies recovered in 2024 and 34 in 2025, according to figures cited in the same Click2Houston report. A broader review found that Houston police responded to 39 incidents involving bodies found in bayous between September 2024 and September 2025, according to Houston Public Media.

Of those 39 cases, causes of death were still pending for 15 people, and 11 more were listed as having an undetermined cause of death, the outlet's analysis found. Altogether, two out of every three bayou-related deaths in that yearlong span lacked a conclusive cause of death. Buffalo Bayou accounted for the largest share, with 16 of the 39 cases, followed by Brays Bayou with nine, and only one of the incidents was ultimately ruled a homicide by HPD.

In nearly every case tracked over that period, police documented that they did not observe signs of foul play or trauma — echoing the preliminary findings in Tuesday's discovery near West Loop South. One earlier case from July involved a 40-year-old man found in Buffalo Bayou whose cause of death was still pending months later, underscoring how often these cases stretch on without resolution.

For now, the West Loop South case remains an open investigation, with HPD awaiting both a positive identification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and autopsy results to determine how the man died.
