A man was found dead early Sunday on the 3800 block of Folsom Avenue in south St. Louis, just steps from a children's hospital, and homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. St. Louis police discovered the body at about 4:50 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, in the city's Tiffany neighborhood, according to the department.
The discovery, first reported by KSDK, remains an early-stage investigation, and the station describes it as a developing story. Key details, including the victim's identity and cause of death, have not been released. As is standard procedure, St. Louis's Homicide Division routinely takes the lead on dead-on-scene discoveries and unconfirmed fatalities before the medical examiner issues an official cause-of-death ruling, according to APM Reports.
The block sits near SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, a 195-bed nonprofit pediatric hospital and Level I pediatric trauma center at 1465 South Grand Boulevard that has served the area since 1956, per the American Hospital Directory. The Tiffany neighborhood itself is a compact stretch of South St. Louis bounded by Chouteau Avenue to the north, South Grand Boulevard to the east, Interstate 44 to the south, and South 39th Street to the west, according to the City of St. Louis.
A Block With a Violent Past
This is not the first time the 3800 block of Folsom Avenue has drawn homicide detectives. In July 2016, a triple shooting on the same block left 43-year-old Reba Battle dead and two others wounded after occupants of a black vehicle opened fire on people standing outside a house around 1 a.m., the station reported at the time. Violence has surfaced elsewhere in the Tiffany neighborhood more recently as well — Hoodline previously reported that a man was hospitalized in October 2024 after being stabbed during an argument that escalated into a physical assault.
Neighborhood safety data compiled by DoorProfit puts Tiffany's 2026 overall crime index at 122, roughly 22% above the national average, with nearby Midtown and Fox Park posting similar scores. Still, the citywide picture tells a more complicated story: St. Louis recorded 139 homicides in 2025, its lowest annual total in 12 years, and logged 63 homicides through the first half of 2026 compared with 71 over the same span in 2025, according to Fox 2 St. Louis.
Part of a Violent Weekend Citywide
Sunday's discovery on Folsom Avenue came amid a cluster of weekend violence across St. Louis. Homicide detectives also responded to at least two other fatal shootings over the same Friday-into-Sunday stretch, including separate incidents on Goodfellow Boulevard and Plymouth Avenue, the station reported.
If investigators determine the Folsom Avenue death resulted from an intentional killing without premeditation, Missouri law classifies second-degree murder as a Class A felony punishable by 10 to 30 years or life in prison, under Missouri Revised Statutes § 565.021 as cited by FindLaw. First-degree murder, covered under a separate statute, requires proof of deliberate premeditation. No charges have been announced, and police have not said whether foul play is suspected.
