A man was found dead with suspicious injuries along the fence line on the north shoulder of Kuawa Street, fronting Kuawa Park in Hilo, after officers responded to the scene around 7:06 a.m. Monday. Hawaiʻi Island police say Area I Criminal Investigation Section detectives and evidence specialists were called in to process the site, and the man's identity has not yet been released.
According to Hawaii News Now, officers received a report of an unresponsive man and found him on the ground near the park's fence line. South Hilo Patrol Officers responded. Police are withholding the victim's name pending positive identification and notification of next of kin, and the station's report notes the man's identity remains unknown for now.
Detective Named as Case Contact
The department identifies Detective Amy Omaya as a contact for the case.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death, per Hawaii News Now's reporting. Under Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes § 841-3, the coroner or deputy coroner is legally required to conduct an immediate, thorough investigation whenever a death occurs as a result of violence, accident, suicide, or in a suspicious or unusual manner, a framework explained by the Hawaiʻi State Legislature.
A Park With a History and a Civic Role
Kuawa Park sits near the Hoʻolulu Complex and does double duty beyond recreation. Hawaiʻi County designates its parking lot as the primary emergency relocation site for the Hilo Park & Ride whenever Kamehameha Avenue floods, according to the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency. The county's Department of Parks and Recreation has also been mentioned in connection with the park.
The surrounding area has seen police activity before.
How Hilo's Death Rate Compares
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data compiled in 2024 showed statewide firearm-related death figures for Hawaiʻi, according to USAFacts. Statewide, though, Hawaiʻi's overall violent crime rate remained roughly 35 percent below the national median at 2.5 incidents per 1,000 residents in 2026 data, according to recent statewide reporting. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of the Attorney General also notes that violent crime in Hawaiʻi frequently involves parties known to one another.
For now, the cause of the man's death and his identity remain undetermined pending Wednesday's autopsy. Investigators continue to seek tips from anyone with information about what happened at Kuawa Park.
