Another stabbing in Kalihi. A man estimated to be in his 60s was rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning with an apparent stab wound on Mokauea Street, adding to what has been a violent year for the neighborhood.
What We Know So Far
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to Mokauea Street in Kalihi on Tuesday morning to treat a man with an apparent stab wound, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports. EMS estimated he was 64 years old.
He was taken to an emergency room in serious condition.
Beyond that, details are thin. Officials haven't said what led to the stabbing, whether anyone has been arrested, or whether the victim knew his attacker. His identity has not been released.
Could Charges Reflect the Victim's Age?
No suspect has been publicly identified, so any talk of charges is premature. Still, Hawaiʻi law treats certain assaults on people 60 and older more seriously than the same assaults on younger victims. That could matter if prosecutors end up pursuing an assault case here.
If police instead treat it as an attempted killing, the stakes rise considerably. In Hawaiʻi, attempted second-degree murder carries the same penalty as the completed crime: life in prison with the possibility of parole.
A Second Older Man Stabbed Days Earlier
Tuesday's stabbing comes just two days after a separate, and so far unrelated, attack on the other side of the island.
On Sunday morning, a 60-year-old man was found injured inside his vehicle at Heʻeia Kea Pier in Kāneʻohe at about 7 a.m. with multiple puncture wounds, KITV reports. Paramedics treated him for apparent stab wounds and lacerations and took him to a hospital in serious condition. The Honolulu Police Department has opened an attempted murder investigation.
Nothing so far connects the two cases. Heʻeia Kea sits on the Windward side, roughly a half-hour drive over the Koʻolau from Kalihi. Anyone with information on the Heʻeia Kea incident is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300.

The Mokauea Street attack is the latest in a series of stabbings that have put Kalihi residents on edge in 2026.
In June, police arrested a 26-year-old on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder after a 24-year-old man was stabbed during an argument on Bannister Street, according to the Honolulu Police Department. Earlier this year, a 35-year-old man was left in serious condition after being stabbed on Waterhouse Street, as Hoodline reported.

The area around Mokauea Street has seen tragedy of a non-violent kind, too. In April, emergency crews ran a multi-agency search around Mokauea Fishing Village off Sand Island for a missing diver. The search ended when his body was recovered offshore, as Hoodline reported at the time.
