An 85-year-old woman was attacked before dawn on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg on Saturday, September 5, when an unidentified individual tried to forcefully rip a cart from her hands, placed his hands around her neck, and left her with multiple lacerations to her legs before fleeing on foot. The attempted robbery happened around 5:45 a.m. in front of 340 Graham Avenue, and the suspect has not been identified or caught.

What Charges Could Apply
The location falls within the NYPD's 90th Precinct, headquartered at 211 Union Avenue and commanded by Captain Vincent Seminerio, per NYC.gov. Under New York Penal Law, an attacker who causes physical injury to a victim 65 or older while being more than 10 years younger can be charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony, according to FindLaw. Separately, intentionally applying pressure to someone's throat or neck constitutes criminal obstruction of breathing, a Class A misdemeanor, the same law resource notes.
Forcibly stealing property while causing physical injury to a victim can also be charged as second-degree robbery, a Class C violent felony carrying 3.5 to 15 years in state prison, per FindLaw. Because the suspect did not manage to take the cart, prosecutors could instead pursue the crime as an attempt, since New York law allows attempted robbery to be charged as a felony when a suspect acts with intent and takes substantial steps toward completing the crime, even without a completed theft, according to the New York State Senate's penal code.
A Precinct Already Seeing More Violent Assaults
The attack adds to a troubling pattern in the area. NYPD CompStat data recorded 180 felony assaults in the 90th Precinct through early August 2026, a 7.1 percent increase over the 168 logged during the same period in 2025, even as overall major felony complaints in the precinct fell 2.84 percent, Hoodline previously reported in its coverage of a separate neck-slashing attack in the neighborhood.
That trend follows other recent violence along the same commercial strip. Hoodline covered a bag snatching near 327 Graham Avenue that escalated into gunfire, and more recently reported on a fatal fight in East Williamsburg and a fatal shooting of an 18-year-old outside a Williamsburg store, with the gunman in that case still at large.
Underreporting Among Elderly Victims
Attacks targeting older residents are believed to go significantly underreported. A 2026 report by the NYC Department for the Aging found that 54.2 percent of older New Yorkers surveyed who experienced crime or abuse after turning 60 did not report the incidents to police, according to NYC.gov. Statewide, elder abuse and physical mistreatment also affect older adults.
