A man's body was pulled from Chester Creek early Tuesday morning, ending an overnight search that began after reports of someone going under the water near Ethel Waters Park. Police and emergency responders were called to the 200 block of Edgemont Avenue in Chester, Pennsylvania, just before 3 a.m., where marine crews recovered the body and transferred it to the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office.
The search stretched back to Monday night, when rescue boats staged along Chester Creek near the William Penn Landing Site at Edgemont Avenue and Route 13, according to CBS News Philadelphia, which reported that sources confirmed the recovery. Crews worked through Labor Day evening trying to locate the man before the body was ultimately found overnight. As of Tuesday morning, the victim's identity had not been released, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia.
A Search Centered on Historic Ground
The recovery site sits in one of Chester's most historically layered stretches of waterfront. Ethel Waters Park, where the search was centered, is named for the Chester-born blues vocalist and Oscar-nominated actress, and the city held a rededication and fall festival there in October 2024, per the City of Chester. Just downstream, the William Penn Landing Site marks the spot where Pennsylvania's founder first came ashore in 1682, when the area was still known as Upland — a granite monument at the confluence of the creek and the Delaware River that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, according to the National Park Service.
Under Pennsylvania state statute and Delaware County procedures, any sudden or uncertified death in a public waterway falls under the mandatory jurisdiction of the county Medical Examiner for autopsy, toxicology testing and positive identification. Officials routinely withhold identification until autopsy findings and next-of-kin notifications are complete, per the same report from FOX 29.
A Creek With a Painful Recent History
Tuesday's recovery adds to a difficult recent record for Chester Creek. In March 2024, 6-year-old Lin'ajah Brooker fell into the rain-swollen creek near West 8th Street, and despite a multi-day search involving state police, fire departments, sonar equipment and the U.S. Coast Guard, her body was never recovered, according to WHYY. And just last month, emergency crews recovered the body of 33-year-old Chester resident Kortney Staples from the nearby Delaware River after she had gone missing in mid-July, per NBC10 Philadelphia.
Part of the danger comes from the creek's sheer scale. The Chester Creek watershed spans roughly 66 square miles and 128 miles of stream channels across Chester and Delaware counties before emptying into the Delaware River, with about 19 percent of the watershed covered in impervious surfaces that push stormwater into the creek fast after rain, according to the Chester County Planning Commission. Nationally, unintentional drowning kills more than 4,000 people annually in the United States, and open waterways like creeks and rivers carry elevated risk from hidden debris, slippery banks and unmeasured undercurrents, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Efforts to Improve Access and Safety Along the Corridor
The city and state have been working to address the creek corridor even as it continues to pose hazards. In February 2024, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection awarded Chester $40,000 in Coastal Zone grant funding for a feasibility study on a Chester Creek Trail Connector, aimed at improving public access, trail connections and coastal resilience from Crozer Park to the Delaware River waterfront, according to Delaware Currents.
The identity of the man recovered Tuesday and the circumstances that led him into the creek remain unknown, pending further investigation by Chester Police and the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office.
