A man was rushed to the hospital after being shot just after midnight on Johns Island, and as of Friday morning, deputies still have not made an arrest. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office responded to the 2900 block of Evans Way, where officials located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Deputies found the man injured at the scene and he was transported to MUSC for treatment, according to WCIV. His current condition has not been released. MUSC Health University Medical Center in downtown Charleston operates the Lowcountry's only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, providing round-the-clock surgical care for life-threatening gunshot injuries, according to MUSC Health.
Authorities have not made any arrests in the case, and the investigation remains active, per the outlet's report. It is not yet known whether deputies have identified a specific suspect or motive, or whether any residential security camera footage or witnesses from the block have been secured.
A Street With a Troubled Past
This is not the first time law enforcement has responded to trouble on Evans Way. In October 2022, a man received three life sentences for separate crimes; only one sentence arose from a first-degree burglary on Evans Way, while the other two concerned a separate murder and burglary at a Cottageville home, according to The Post and Courier.
Years earlier, in September 2020, sheriff's deputies investigated a felony case at an Evans Way address, arresting a resident accused of physically abusing and financially exploiting her elderly mother, the paper also reported. Those cases predate the current shooting and are unrelated to it, but they add to a pattern of serious police activity tied to the same street.
Part of a Wider Run of Johns Island Violence
The shooting on Evans Way follows other recent violent incidents on Johns Island. In October 2025, police investigated a fatal shooting on Jules Drive after an argument escalated, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to the City of Charleston Police Department.
Earlier this year, a Charleston County deputy was shot in the chest on Johns Island during a pursuit that followed a shots-fired call on Edenborough Road; deputies returned fire and fatally struck the suspect, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. That case remains one of the more serious officer-involved shootings the sheriff's office has handled on the island this year.
Despite these incidents, Johns Island's reported violent-crime risk is lower than the national average.
What Could Come Next Legally
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged with attempted murder, South Carolina Code § 16-3-29 classifies the offense as a felony carrying a non-suspendable prison sentence of up to 30 years without eligibility for probation, according to the South Carolina Legislature. Separately, the state's Act No. 138, enacted in May 2026, amended S.C. Code § 16-1-60 to classify discharging a firearm into or at a dwelling, building, or vehicle as a designated violent crime subject to tiered statutory penalties.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has not released additional details about the Evans Way shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact investigators as the search for a suspect continues.
