Another Severe Crash on the Same Stretch
Another Severe Crash on the Same Stretch This is not the first major incident on I-495 in Mansfield in recent memory. In November 2025, a separate head-on wrong-way crash occurred on I-495 in Mansfield, forcing a multi-hour highway shutdown and triggering a State Police reconstruction probe. Broader traffic safety data shows I-495 averages roughly 9.5 highway fatalities per year across Massachusetts, making it one of the state's deadliest travel corridors, according to Hot 96.9 Boston.
Simultaneous emergency calls in town can require mutual aid coverage from neighboring departments during major incidents, as the Mansfield Fire Department has described. Sunday's crash illustrated that reliance firsthand, pulling in crews from Norton and Taunton to help cover a single highway incident.
