On the 2900 block of Fanshawe Street in Philadelphia’s Mayfair neighborhood, a hole that residents say began as a small dip has grown to roughly living-room size. Wooden planks and metal plates have fallen into it, and neighbors describe disrupted traffic and a daily hazard for families, children and older people trying to get around.
Residents described the sinkhole’s growth and the problems on the block to FOX 29 Philadelphia. They said it had been growing for months, with the situation worsening sharply in recent weeks.
From a Watermelon-Sized Dip to a Living-Room-Sized Crater
Rose Bordeaux, a 26-year resident of Fanshawe Street, told FOX 29 the sinkhole became a major problem within three or four weeks. She warned that “the whole street could go.”
Residents say the hole has disrupted traffic and made it difficult for families and drivers to move safely around the block.
Crews Covered the Hole, Then Left Without a Timeline
The Philadelphia Water Department and Philadelphia Gas Works covered the sinkhole with plates and a pile of dirt. A resident named Gus told FOX 29 that the agencies left after covering it, and neighbors did not know when they would return.
At the time of FOX 29’s report, no repair start date had been announced. The station said it requested a timeline and plan of action from the Water Department and PGW, but did not receive a response.
How the City Handles Street Repairs
Philadelphia’s Department of Streets guidance says it may involve other City agencies or outside parties, including the Water Department and PGW, in street repairs depending on the problem. The guidance does not specify a timeline for the work on Fanshawe Street.
Neighbors Just Want the Block Made Safe
A resident named Shawna told FOX 29 she wants the agencies to fix the hazard. Gus also said residents want help and want the block made safe.
The hole remains covered, but residents have not been given a timeline for permanent repairs.
