Placer County officials and Meadow Vista residents gathered Saturday morning to mark the completion of the Meadow Vista Walkway Project, a long-in-the-works effort to bring sidewalks, curbs and safer crossings to Placer Hills Road. The first phase added roughly 700 linear feet of curb, gutter and sidewalk along the west side of the road, right in front of school district property.
Supervisor Cindy Gustafson joined the county's Department of Public Works and members of the Meadow Vista community for the celebration, according to a post from Placer County
. The county described the finished project as the culmination of years of collaboration between the county and the Meadow Vista community, a partnership that dates back well before this weekend's ribbon-cutting-style gathering.
Years in the Making
The walkway concept first came before the Meadow Vista Municipal Advisory Council in October 2023, when the Department of Public Works presented preliminary design concepts for a walkway along Placer Hills Road, per county records. The advisory council was slated to receive a follow-up presentation and offer a formal recommendation on the project in June 2024, according to a county agenda packet.
Momentum picked back up earlier this year. A county memorandum dated April 14 listed an estimated construction cost of $1,400,000 for the project, according to Placer County Public Works Engineering Division. The county had also considered construction management services for the project in March, for an amount not to exceed $228,938, per county records.
What the Project Delivered
Beyond the new curb, gutter and sidewalk fronting school district property, the project also upgraded an existing pedestrian signal and an existing crosswalk, improved the roadway and a nearby parking lot, and addressed longstanding pedestrian safety concerns while aiming to preserve the rural character of Meadow Vista, according to the seed facts tied to the county's announcement. A county project page lists funding sources including traffic impact fees and county road funds, alongside references to the Placer Hills Union School District and the Sierra Foothills Cycling Club, though the exact dollar breakdown on that page appears incomplete in the county's own listing.
Part of a Broader Push for Safer Corridors
Meadow Vista's project fits into a wider pattern of pedestrian safety upgrades across Placer County's rural corridors. The Placer County Transportation Planning Agency has led a multi-agency effort, requested by the City of Auburn and Placer County, to close sidewalk gaps along the Highway 49 corridor. That Highway 49 sidewalk work is intended to create a contiguous, accessible path meant to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, according to Gold Country Media.
The county has other similar projects in the pipeline, including the Bowman Sidewalk Infill project, which is designed to provide a dedicated, accessible pedestrian pathway, with construction projected to begin in spring 2030. Back in 2017, a comparable effort in North Auburn installed sidewalks, curbs and gutters along State Route 49, adding about 1,100 feet of sidewalk to improve access in that area, according to the Placer Sentinel.
For now, Meadow Vista residents have a finished project to show for years of advisory meetings and planning documents. The county has not detailed a final construction cost, funding breakdown or contractor beyond the estimates listed in its planning records, but the walkway along Placer Hills Road is open and in use.
