A Charlotte Italian favorite with a Michelin recommendation to its name is opening its third location just off Lake Norman. Little Mama's, the retro red-sauce concept from restaurateur Frank Scibelli, will open its doors at 9623 Bailey Road in Cornelius on September 7, bringing a brick-oven pizza program, a hand-pulled mozzarella ritual, and 140 seats to a stretch of North Carolina that has been quietly turning into a dining destination of its own.

According to Queen City News, the new restaurant spans 4,300 square feet and includes a dining room, a refined bar, and a bright sunroom. Scibelli, founder of FS Food Group, described the project as a heartfelt one, saying Little Mama's is built around the flavors of his childhood in New England. That personal thread runs deep for Scibelli, who grew up in an Italian family in Springfield, Massachusetts, earned an MBA, and worked as a business consultant in Charlotte before opening his flagship restaurant, according to US Foods.

Little Mama's opened as a sister concept to Mama Ricotta's, the Charlotte institution Scibelli launched in 1992 at age 27, per US Foods. Hoodline covered the debut of the first Little Mama's location in the SouthPark neighborhood back in 2020, and the concept has since grown to include a second location at Rea Farms in South Charlotte, where it first debuted the brick-oven pizza program now headed to Cornelius.

A Michelin Nod Ahead of the Lake Norman Debut

The timing carries extra weight this year. In November 2025, the inaugural Michelin Guide American South recognized the original SouthPark Little Mama's as a MICHELIN Recommended restaurant, according to WCNC. That recognition adds a layer of regional prestige to a brand that started as a pandemic-era passion project inspired by 1960s and 1970s New England Italian-American eateries, back when it first opened in June 2020.

One of the concept's signature touches, the on-site Mozzarella Presentation, will follow the brand north. Fresh cheese is pulled and stretched by hand daily and served tableside with seasonal toppings, a detail highlighted by Visit North Carolina. Paired with the brick-oven pizzas debuted at Rea Farms, the Cornelius menu is shaping up as a fuller expression of the concept than its earlier locations.

A Fast-Moving Corner of Cornelius

The Bailey Road space has seen quick turnover in recent years. The suite was previously home to G.O.A.T. Pizza, a sports-themed restaurant from celebrity chef David Burke that opened in April 2024 and permanently closed in July 2025, according to Cornelius Today. Little Mama's now steps into that vacancy as part of a growing food cluster on the block.

The restaurant shares its complex with Pulp Juice and Smoothie Bar, which opened in Suite 101 in April 2025, and sits steps from Tex-Mex spot Chili Willi's, which opened at 9615 Bailey Road in May, per Southern Charm Realty. Together, the openings mark Bailey Road's transformation into a dense neighborhood dining corridor within a fairly short stretch of time.

Chasing Diners Who Once Drove Into Charlotte

The Cornelius opening also fits into a broader pattern for FS Food Group, which operates 17 Carolinas locations across seven hospitality concepts, including Midwood Smokehouse, Yafo Kitchen, Paco's Tacos & Tequila, and Calle Sol Latin Café. This marks the company's second venture in the Lake Norman area following Midwood Smokehouse in Birkdale Village, a move aimed at capturing diners from Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson who previously commuted into Charlotte for upscale casual dining, according to the company's own account on its website.

Once it opens, Little Mama's in Cornelius will run Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For a Lake Norman dining scene that has been reshaping itself restaurant by restaurant, the arrival of a Michelin-recommended, hand-stretched-mozzarella Italian spot represents one of its most notable additions yet.
