A 20-year-old riding a mini bike suffered severe injuries after a driver struck him near the intersection of Jaymark Lane and Nolan Road in Middleburg last Sunday, then allegedly asked the teen whether he was faking his injuries before speeding away. The Clay County Sheriff's Office says the young rider was attempting to pass the vehicle when the collision occurred, and now investigators are asking the public to help identify the driver responsible.
According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, deputies and detectives responded to the crash scene in Middleburg last Sunday and began piecing together what happened between the rider and the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a red sedan possibly a Toyota Camry. Investigators say the driver fled south on Nolan Road toward County Road 218 after the injured teen answered the driver's question about whether his injuries were real. The sheriff's office describes the suspect driver as a white male in his mid-40s, heavy build, wearing glasses.
Damage to the Suspect Vehicle Could Be Key
The Camry sought by investigators is believed to have bumper damage, a detail the sheriff's office is hoping someone in the community recognizes. Detectives searched for nearby camera footage that might have captured the crash or the vehicle's escape route, but the sheriff's office says no such footage has been found so far.
The crash occurred near Nolan Road and County Road 218. That location may complicate efforts to track the vehicle down.
Serious Legal Exposure for the Driver
Leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious bodily injury could have serious legal consequences if the driver is identified and charged.
Investigators have not made public any determination about the right-of-way of either vehicle on Nolan Road at the time of the crash.

The Middleburg case remains under investigation, and the circumstances surrounding it are still being examined.
