Twenty-two dance companies are converging on downtown Milwaukee next month as Nõ Studios stages DanceFest on October 3, with Detroit Jit among the styles represented.
The festival's free daytime performances take place at Peck Pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater along the Milwaukee RiverWalk that seats up to 396 guests, according to the Marcus Performing Arts Center. The evening program moves indoors to the Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall, described by the venue as an intimate jewel-box auditorium.
A Chicago Company Returns With a Piece Rooted in Family History
Among the visiting companies is Chicago Dance Crash, which is returning to DanceFest to present “4 Bar Loop,” a quartet by resident choreographer Elijah Motley that first premiered in July 2026. According to Chicago Dance Crash, the piece explores Black male identity against the backdrop of civil rights history, with Motley drawing on stories of racial discrimination passed down from his grandparents.
The lineup also spotlights Detroit Jit, a fast-footed street dance style that emerged in Detroit during the late 1970s through the McGhee brothers. Its beats included techno and ghetto house music, and the style incorporates acrobatics and is performed in circles of spectators, per Model D Media.
How Nõ Studios Built a Home for Working Artists
Nõ Studios was founded in 2018 by Oscar-winning filmmaker John Ridley and former Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele as a 40,000-square-foot creative hub inside the historic Pabst Brewery complex, according to Milwaukee Record. The organization's name references Japanese Nō theater.
Lisa Caesar is part of the organization's leadership group, according to FOX 6 Milwaukee.
Funding a Festival and Supporting Local Artists Year-Round
DanceFest, first established in 2018, is funded entirely by Nõ Studios and its corporate partners to keep dance accessible to the public, according to No Studios.
The organization also supports local artists and provides artist workspaces.
