A 4-year-old girl is dead and her mother is hospitalized after what Houston police describe as an attempted murder-suicide inside a home in the 300 block of Terra Reserve Place, near North Kirkwood Road in West Houston. Officers were dispatched to the scene around 5:43 p.m. Tuesday, and preliminary information indicates the mother shot her young daughter before turning the gun on herself.
The shooting was first reported as a shooting that left one dead and one injured in West Houston, according to FOX 26 Houston, which cited the Houston Police Department in reporting that officers responded to a shooting call in the 300 block of Terra Reserve Place before 6 p.m. Tuesday. That initial report described a child killed and another person injured, with homicide investigators responding to the scene, though the cause of the shooting was not yet known and no further description of those involved was available at the time. Updated reporting from KHOU 11 filled in the missing details, with Houston police saying the incident involved a mother and her 4-year-old child in what investigators believe was a domestic murder-suicide attempt.
HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said the mother survived her self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported by paramedics to an area hospital, as relayed by Click2Houston. HPD's Westside patrol officers secured the crime scene in West Houston as the investigation got underway, the outlet reported. Terra Reserve Place sits in the Memorial neighborhood near North Kirkwood Road, in a residential area near major West Houston thoroughfares.
What Charges Could Follow
If the mother survives her injuries and prosecutors move forward with charges, Texas law provides for the most severe criminal penalty available for the killing of a young child. Under Section 19.03 of the Texas Penal Code, intentionally or knowingly causing the death of a child under 10 years of age constitutes capital murder, a capital felony punishable by life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty, according to FindLaw. No charges have been announced in this case, and it remains unclear what will happen once the mother's medical condition and the investigation are resolved.

Four days earlier, on September 25, a 12-year-old child was shot and wounded while sitting inside a family vehicle on Barker Cypress Road during an unrelated parking lot shooting, with three other children in the vehicle at the time, as Hoodline previously reported. And on September 20, a 5-year-old girl was killed after gunfire struck a vehicle carrying five children along Grant Road in Cypress during an apparent road-rage incident; she was flown by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office reported in June that guns were involved in 3,452 aggravated charges across the county in 2025, a 10.8% decrease from 3,870 in 2024. District Attorney Sean Teare noted that while charges declined year-over-year, they remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Statewide, the Texas Juvenile Justice Department recorded 2,474 juvenile referrals involving firearms in fiscal year 2025, a 45% increase from 1,708 in fiscal year 2020, with juvenile homicide referrals statewide climbing 65% over the same five-year span.
