A motorcycle passenger was seriously hurt early Saturday when the bike she was riding struck a center median on San Antonio's Northwest Side, according to San Antonio police. The crash happened around 2:36 a.m. near Culebra Road and Les Harrison Drive, leaving a 27-year-old woman with serious, non-life-threatening injuries while the driver sustained minor injuries.
According to News 4 San Antonio, the motorcycle was traveling east on Culebra Road when the driver lost control and struck the median. The 27-year-old passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the driver sustained minor injuries. Police have not released additional details about what caused the driver to lose control.
Another Early-Morning Wreck on San Antonio's Deadliest Corridor
Saturday's crash adds to a grim tally on a stretch of roadway that city data has already flagged as uniquely hazardous. Culebra Road is designated as San Antonio's single most dangerous roadway corridor on the city's High-Injury Network dashboard, which recorded 116 fatal or severe-injury collisions along the corridor over a five-year tracking period from 2018 through 2022, according to KSAT. The city's Vision Zero Action Plan also addresses roadway safety.
The road has produced a string of serious wrecks in recent months. On July 8, a 39-year-old driver was killed in a crash on the 12500 block of Culebra Road after traveling at high speed, striking a vehicle from behind, and crashing into a concrete wall, the San Antonio Express-News reported. A six-vehicle crash near Culebra Road and Village Park on Sunday morning, August 16, sent three people to the hospital, according to KSAT, as reported by Hoodline.
Motorcycle Safety Concerns Persist Across Bexar County
Saturday's median strike also fits a broader pattern for motorcyclists in the region. Preliminary Texas Department of Transportation data for 2025 recorded 574 motorcyclist fatalities statewide, with Bexar County among the leading Texas counties for overall motorcycle crash volume, per Angel Reyes & Associates. The same source notes that nearly 30 percent of all fatal motorcycle collisions in Texas occur at or near intersections, where speed misjudgments and sudden lane control issues are most severe.
Culebra Road itself has already produced one fatal motorcycle case this year. A female motorcycle passenger died near Tezel Road in February after falling off a bike during an early-morning high-speed ride, leading San Antonio police to file felony racing charges against the driver in May, as Hoodline reported in its story on the rider busted after a fatal fall. It remains unclear whether Saturday's driver will face any citations, and police have not said whether speed, impairment, or another factor contributed to the loss of control.
