A motorcyclist is in critical condition after a violent crash just before 12:30 a.m. Monday near the Frio Street/Durango Boulevard exit ramp on southbound Interstate 35, just west of downtown San Antonio, according to police. The rider was thrown over a wall and landed in a grassy area near a fire station, where firefighters later found him, as reported by News 4 San Antonio.
According to KSAT, police said the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his motorcycle west of downtown. The bike itself slammed into the San Antonio Police Department's Central Substation, per the outlet's report.
Bike Kept Moving After Rider Was Thrown
In an unusual twist, police said the motorcycle continued on without its rider after the impact. An officer later spotted the crashed motorcycle at the substation and noticed it had no rider, KSAT reports.
Police said the motorcycle driver hit a wall during the crash and was thrown over it, landing in a grassy area out of immediate view. That detail helps explain why firefighters had to search the area before locating him nearby, behind a fire station, per the same account.
Search Effort Leads Firefighters to Injured Rider
Firefighters combed the area and found the man nearby, and he was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition after being seriously injured in the crash, the report states. San Antonio police have not released further details on his identity or condition.
